One of the letters I received was from a five-year-old child addressed to God/Heaven.
Dear God,
I am sad because my daddy died in Iraq, yesterday. I know he was brave and fought against bad men, but my mommy and I miss him very much. My mommy told me that he is in Heaven, and you have made him a beautiful house to live in. I sent you a couple of pictures, so you will recognize him up there.
I wish he wasn’t gone because I miss him reading stories to me. Can I visit him in Heaven sometimes?
Love,
Marilee
P.S.: Mom wrote down the words for me.
Dear Marilee,
Your dad is in Heaven with me. His mom, your grandma, and brother, Gary, were here to welcome him.
You know, Marilee, your daddy isn’t hurt anymore. His spirit lives here with me, but his memories live in you and your mommy’s hearts. Your dad told me that he loves you, and sends hugs and kisses. I would like you to keep the photos, so you can think of him often. There is no plane that flies to Heaven, but your daddy watches out for you from here.
Thank you for the beautiful letter. Thank your mom for sending it to me. What a special mom you have. I made her just for you.
Love,
God and the special angel who wrote down the words for me
Another letter was from an 18-year-old sibling of a 14-year-old brother with special needs.
Dear God,
Can you please forgive me for my lack of understanding with my brother? I used to get mad because my brother got so much attention from my mom and dad. It was hard for me to be the well behaved child while he got away with everything because of autism. I was so embarrassed when he acted out in public; I would act like I didn’t know who he was. When I had friends over, he would walk around with nothing but underwear on (or maybe not even that) or hold his breath and flap his hands when he was anxious. Sometimes I would put on my headphones, and pretend to be in a world where John didn’t exist.
I don’t think many people realize his unique skills. At age nine, he was able to play Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin on the piano after hearing it just once. He is like a bright musician, playing for the deaf. Those who hear him love him, but those who don’t pay attention, never hear his song.
I am so thankful you sent me, John. He has taught me how to be patient, overcome tough challenges, and be genuine and honest. But best of all, he has shown me what love is.
Love,
Sophie
Dear Sophie,
Please don’t feel guilty for sharing your true feelings with me. You have grown into a compassionate and caring young woman.
I see all you do for your brother. I see how you pack his lunch for school. I see you tickle him and chase him and laugh with him. I see how you protect him when other children don’t understand. I see you play with him, cuddle him, and every day teach him.
Thank you for loving your brother unconditionally and accepting him as different, but not less.
