my Mother would scold,
when the bouncing would start
from what I would hold,
The rubber ball
all shiny and new
enticed me with brightness,
so what could I do?...
No kid that I met
could ever resist
the red sphere of recoil
that lay in my fist,
My intention,
was not to bounce,
until I was outside,
then came such a pounce…
Ninety five pounds
of furred destruction
gave into temptation,
discounted instruction,
With that slobbery lunge
my ball just took sail,
up and down on the floor
and along the rail…
Like springs my legs jumped
into high action,
past one distressed Mom, with
lips in contraction,
Frantic to catch
the berry red streak,
and stop the great havoc
it threatened to wreak …
I wish I could say
that all ended there,
but the mayhem continued
to dance stair after stair,
I urgently followed
the bang on the wall,
with a cling and a clang
things started to fall…
Swift like a bullet
the sphere ricocheted,
thumped into a pitcher
that Mom had arrayed,
My arms stretched up high,
but still out of reach
was the object of chaos,
and a lesson to teach…
Towards Granddad it sailed
who, like a golfer on tee,
with a wink and a hook,
swung the ball back towards me,
I stood in horror,
as that red rocket soared nearer,
past moms futile blocking
it crashed into a mirror…
Splinters of glass flew
here, there, every place,
Fetcher rushed out,
along with Mom’s grace,
There was no jury
the ruling was quick
“You’re grounded, with chores,”
was mother’s verdict…
Our freedom had vanished
in barely a blink,
with Fetchers in irons,
and me at the sink,
Granddad cleared his throat,
“Work lessens with two,
I am partly to blame,
It’s the least I can do…”
When the mess was swept up,
For a proxy we shopped,
Once mom saw the gift,
all charges were dropped,
Her eyes filled with tears
as she reminisced,
and placed in my hand,
what lay in her fist…
“You were a bouncer?”
Could this be true?
My eyes widened, when,
I held the ball blue
“Should I demonstrate?”
Mother’s eyes danced around,
my mouth flew open,
and out came that sound…
“Not in the house!”

Some energy had to be, rightly, worked off with chores around the washing-up bowl.
