Life flourished in the town of Harmony. On the east side of the community, citizens tended their groves with love and devotion, thankful for the nut crop that provided for their families. The east-siders named all of their streets after nuts. If you lived on the east side of town, your address might be chestnut street or walnut lane. Those who lived on the east became known as the nuts and those who lived on the west side became known as the fruits. Beautiful vineyards and orchards provided in abundance for the west- siders, while walnuts, chestnuts and almonds grew a plenty on the east side of town.
Everybody lived and worked harmoniously in Harmony until one fateful day,when,a new executive suggested that “Harmony cake” be renamed “Fruitcake”. The argument being that the primary ingredient in Harmony cake is fruit, and therefore, the more appropriate name for the holiday cake would be “fruitcake”.
The feud that erupted from that board meeting raged so intense that the town split becoming two separate towns. The west side of town, the fruit side became the town of Concord and the east side became Walnut Grove. From that time forward, the fruits wouldn’t associate with the nuts nor would the nuts associate with the fruits.Time passed and nothing could mend the little town of Harmony.They remained a town divided.
Until,one day Tommy, a young man 19 yrs.-old, fell while picking Bing cherries in a tall tree. Many travelers passed by without helping. One man, in a great hurry, convinced himself that the moaning from the cherry grove was nothing more than the wind. For hours, the young lad lay moaning and in great peril, until an older gentleman, Stan who owned the Hickory Inn had compassion on Tommy. He took Tommy back to the Inn. There he and his daughter, Tiffany nursed him back to health. This wrought a change in the little town that had split in two and this morning a birth announcement in the Grapenut gazette signaled the return of a touch of harmony to the town nestled between nut groves and orchards. It read: Baby girl born to Thomas and Tiffany Newday.
