“Not that one, Lord,” John Mark requests.
I want this one written down.
“But Lord, there were other blind healings Jesus did. Can’t I tell about one of those?”
Yes.
“Good.”
Later.
“Oh.”
I want this one to be written here.
“Lord, there are so many other healings Jesus did. This seems here like Jesus’ first attempt didn’t work correctly.”
What did I say?
“I will do Your will.”
John Mark begins to write:
“…some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When He had spit on the man’s eyes and put His hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”
He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”
Once more Jesus put His hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight restored, and he saw everything clearly. (Mark 8:22-25)
John Mark thought, No one is going to understand this. It certainly appears as if Jesus wasn’t able to heal the man’s sight like He had done so many times before. But who am I to critique or edit God’s dictation?
Almost two thousand years have passed while those who read about this miracle scratch their heads as John Mark did and ask, “Why did Jesus have to touch the man’s eyes twice? And why did the man see people as trees walking around?”
The 20th Century brought with it skepticism and mockers of the Bible. Doubters and nay-sayers towards God and His Holy Word. “These miracles are just hearsay, dreams made up and not true. Prove any of them!” This particular miracle of healing the blind man wasn’t mentioned much because no one understood it.
The 20th Century also ushered in advances in medical science, more than in all the centuries before then put together. Antibiotics and other medications, machines to keep people alive longer and in better health, diets improved, new surgical techniques and treatments that could not even be imagined centuries or even years before. One such advance was the ability, in some cases, to give sight to the blind.
Medicine was perplexed when surgery first started giving sight to people who were born blind yet for sometime afterwards saw things “out of whack”, it seemed as if the persons could see clearly but were confused with what they saw. They might perceive a wall clock as part of someone’s head, or a man might have a head growing out of his chest when he was holding a dog, or clouds floating over were part of mountains, or even people as trees walking around.
Further studies revealed that although the eyes themselves were functioning perfectly normal, the interpreting region of the brain (the occipital lobe in the back of the brain) had never had to interpret anything before and was literally “getting its wires crossed”. It took some time for the brain to properly decode the images sent to it by the eyes.
Now the miracle John Mark was hesitant to transcribe made sense and proving to this generation that all the other miracles Jesus performed were true as recorded. Who, but God, would know 2,000 years ago that the eyes had a sight interpretation center in the brain and it could sometimes get its “wires crossed”? John Mark and scribes since have wondered and some possibly wanted to edit or remove this miracle from the Bible but they followed the Creator’s direction giving evidence of the Bible’s accuracy. A miracle, written centuries ago, proven by modern medicine and silencing the critics.
A double miracle for the modern man!
