Synopsis: Each person on this planet has a contribution to make. Sometimes the seemingly insignificant can become mighty in the hands of God. This drama gives a glimpse of that ripple effect.
Cast: Narrator – Male or Female -One male 1900’s costume –one male off stage voice –One male –sergeant- one male –private – two females one in 1900’s costume, one in modern day costume
Props: A desk and chair, a quill and ink bottle, a mailbox and prop that gives the appearance of post office window, army cot.
Setting: General Stage
Scripture: Esther 4: 14b And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this? NIV [Have narrator read at start of performance]
Narrator: In the 1800’s salesmen carried cards that were referred to as ‘visiting cards’ or ‘trade cards’. They handed these cards out to customers in the same way as the modern day business card. These cards generally showed a picture of the product that the salesman represented. For Dr. Emanuel Herrmann, the cards sparked the idea for the first ‘postal cards’ or as they were called originally ‘correspondence cards’. In 1865 Dr. Herrmann wrote an article suggesting the use of a postal card which would only cost about one penny to mail. Austria became the first postal service to introduce postal cards on October 1, 1869 inspired by Dr. Herrmann’s article. This was the beginning of the cards still used today, the postcard. The introduction of postcards with pictures of tourist areas followed closely on the tail of the original cost saving variety postal cards. As you know these cards caught on like wildfire and are still popular today.
[First vignette stage right- Man in early 1900’s dress sitting at a desk with quill in hand composing a letter]
Off stage voice:
Dearest mother,
Today as I arrived at Grand Central Station, my thoughts were of you. In my mind, I could picture your reaction to the sights and sounds that I experienced. It made me smile. I am sending you this picture postal card so that I might share this with you.

[Second vignette stage left –Army Sergeant standing in front of a private- cot behind them]
Sergeant: [handing the post card to private] Soldier, write your mama.
Private: [saluting] Sir! Yes, Sir!
[Third vignette –center stage 2 Mothers checking the mail- Each pulls out the post card, reads a little, holds it to her heart.]
Mothers: [in unison] Charles! It’s a post card from Robert!
Narrator: Surely, Dr. Emanuel Herrmann couldn’t have anticipated the far reaching impact that his article would have on the world. He like Esther of the Bible took his place in history for such a time as this. We are called to do the same. God alone knows our impact on the generations. But each ripple starts with you and with me.
