But the one gift I appreciated the most has now turned against me! The Egyptian servant that I received has been one of the best servants I have ever had. She knows of things the people of my own country knew nothing of! Beauty treatments and pampering… oh lovely things.
But now? After I humbled myself and allowed her the privilege of sleeping with my husband in hopes of having a baby. As soon as she realizes she is with child, what does she do? She flaunts this in my face! You would think she would know her place after all this time but no, she struts around here, looking proud as a peacock. And the look on her face when my husband is near? Does she really believe he now favors her—a mere slave—over me? Ha!
Not that Abram is any help! He was the one who told me of this strange prediction from his God—that his descendants would outnumber the stars. Well, enough time has passed and am I any more able to have a baby then I was before? Apparently his God wasn’t planning to use me in this scenario.
But, oh, how my arms long for a child of my own to hold! So that was when we decided—yes, WE— for Abram certainly did nothing to dissuade me —we decided to try to have a baby through that—that —oh I can’t even say her name! That wretched woman!
So now she is pregnant—with Abrams child. This is to be MY child as well but with as much contempt as this woman has shown me, I fear this babe she carries will hate me too. And as angry as I am her and Abram right now, I am not even sure I want anything to do with this child! Oh, what a fine mess!
To make matters worse, I go to my husband and tell him how horrible this situation has turned out to be. I tell him how this servant girl treats me so contemptuously. I told him this was his fault! Yes, his! Did he not agree to sleep with her? I guess his faith that all these descendants would come through the two of us wasn’t as strong as he claims.
And did he have to act like he enjoyed sleeping with her? Why, we wouldn’t even have Hagar in our camp in the first place if not for that ridiculous incident with the Pharaoh. I reminded him—oh yes, I reminded him—this is all his fault. And what does the man say to me?
“She’s your servant. Deal with her as you see fit.” Way to avoid responsibility Abram! Well fine, since he’s left it up to me, I will deal with it! This woman will learn her place, baby or no baby! I’m going to wipe that smug look off her face and remind her once and for all who’s in charge around here!
And as for Abram… well… like I said to him earlier… He’ll pay for this! His God will make him pay for doing this to me!
(authors note: I see this being used as a monologue in skit form, perhaps as a set up to illustrate what can happen when we take things into our own hands rather than waiting upon the Lord.)
