I am a Pharisee, you see.
My name is Nicodemus,
And tonight, I’m filled with curiosity.
For another teacher has come,
He speaks of Holy things.
From God I think He must be,
For signs and wonders He brings.
I’ll go tonight and ask Him;
To share of what He knows.
Something tells me He is willing.
Such wisdom He truly shows.
“Have you seen all of God’s Kingdom?”
I ask right from the start.
He replies to me so assuredly…
(The pounding, loud in my heart).
“Unless you are born again,
The Kingdom of God you will not see.”
I heard the words from His lips,
But it made no sense to me.
“Huh?” was my response,
For I could not picture this.
How does a man who is old like me,
Return to unborn bliss?”
The Rabbi answered with more
Strange words that I did hear.
“Be born of water and of Spirit,
Then the Kingdom of God will be near.”
“For flesh is surely flesh
And born in Spirit remains so.
Why are you so amazed,
For these things you should already know?”
“Do you not hear the wind?
For where does it come and does go?
So it is the same with the Spirit-born.
Some mysteries you may not know.”
So I asked again of the Master,
“How can these things so be?”
He replied again with a question,
“Do you teach to Israel and see?”
“We speak of what we know,
And we testify to what we have seen.
Yet you do not accept, and still lament,
…What on Earth do You really mean?”
“Then how shall you believe,
When I speak of Heavenly things?
There is only One who ascended,
And the same One descended, brings.
I wanted to comprehend His teachings.
He spoke further with such love.
He talked about the Son of Man,
Who would be “lifted up” from above.
“Huh? How can it be so simple?”
I think these words symbolize
That God has a love for this world
That He sent the One, who died and would rise.
Whoever believes in Jesus,
The resurrected Son of Man,
Will have eternal, everlasting life.
For this is how God has it planned.
So I went home and then prayed about it;
What He said about a second birth.
It is a spiritual renewing I concluded.
He is the Messiah, sent from God to Earth.
I am Nicodemus, the Pharisee,
And to the Son of Man I did inquire.
Of water and now Spirit, I’m born again.
And to His glory I now truly aspire!
