The yellow scarf tied about my neck waved in the wind. I untied the knot and held it in my hand, allowing the golden material to flap about before releasing the grip of my fingers. Like a graceful snake it slithered through the air, carried by the wind toward the water.
“Bring him home to me,” I whispered as I watched my scarf blow farther out to sea. I smiled thinking of a scripture my dad had spoken to me many times.
“Cast thy bread upon the water…,” he would say. I had, in my own way, cast my bread upon the water in the form of a prayer carried by my scarf. I thought of the woman with the issue of blood. She had said “If I may but touch the hem of His garment…” She’d said it, then done it. She’d believed and then received. I too believed my Lord would bring him home to me. All others had given up on the overdue ship. All but me believed they were lost to the sea.
Again the yellow orb in the sky began to sink closer to the horizon. My heart tried to sink with it. I refused the fear. I knew I must stand firm in my belief in order to receive.
“Come quickly!” I heard the yells. “They’re back! It’s a miracle. Who would have believed?” The cries and cheers resounded through the streets.
Twenty one days I’d gone to the edge of the cliff. Twenty one times I’d thanked the Lord for bringing him home to me. And twenty one times He’d heard me.
My husband smiled at me from the railing of the ship’s deck as he lined up to disembark. What a sight he was with his sun-bleached hair, tanned skin…and my yellow scarf held tightly in his right hand.
“I believe this belongs to you,” he said with his feet planted firmly on the ground where I waited. He touched my cheek with the scarf. I closed my eyes as a single tear coursed down my cheek. He gently brushed it away with his thumb as he whispered to me, “I knew you hadn’t given up; that you’d continued to believe. And when He brought your scarf to me upon the water, I knew we’d be okay. I knew I’d bring it home to you.”
After twenty one days He had returned it to me bringing with it that for which I’d believed.
