Lillian leaned over putting the menu a little higher to cover her face. As her eyes focused in on Hattie, she gasped as she saw her purple hair underneath her red hat. What in the world…has Hattie lost her mind?
Hattie spotted her friends sitting at a long table in the corner. It was Red-Hat Society Day and you were required to wear red. Most of her friends had red-hats, with matching red outfits. Sometimes all their accessories were red, even down to their underwear, but that usually came from Ellen; she always wears red underwear because she thinks she’s got the best figure. But, who cares about your figure at eighty-nine…heavens, I don’t look too bad at ninety but I’m no head-turner and neither is she.
“Hey ladies,” Miss Hattie squealed out, glad to see you all. Everyone’s eyes were upon her and the purple hair. No one spoke. What do you say, “Miss Hattie you hair looks so nice and purple today?”
No, you just keep your mouth shut.
Miss Hattie sat down and wondered why no one noticed her hair. Maybe it wasn’t a deep enough shade of purple.
She took her hat off to fluff her hair a bit before putting it back on. Not a word. No one said one thing.
Humph, she said to herself. Well, I just won’t notice them either, so up went the menu and as she was reading eyes were checking her out.
Nadine and Lillian were exchanging looks when Hattie caught them.
Well…ladies….why the look?
They just smiled and Nadine said, “Well Hattie, we were just noticing the color of your hair, it usually has a little blue tint to it and now it’s quite a rich purple color. Did your hairdresser get confused?”
“No, I asked for it. Years ago, I decided that if I lived to be ninety and as I grew older…I would wear purple. Now, I know that I could have just worn a purple dress instead but, I’m at an age that nobody cares what I do so I’m going to do all the things I’ve always wanted without caring what people think.”
Nadine just nodded….she was eighty-five so she wasn’t as ‘old’ as Hattie, therefore, she didn’t quite understand.
Miss Hattie went on. “Like today, I feel very free to wear my purple hair and red hat together. I think I look majestic and when people look at me, I pretend that they are in awe of my aging beauty, and not the fact they think I’m a crazy old bat.” Nadine and Lillian exchanged glances.
Humph, coughed the waitress as she came to gather orders
Miss Hattie looked up and said, “I’ll have the double fudge brownie layered with whipped cream, fudge sauce and would you mind putting extra nuts on top for me. Thank you.”
Lillian looked at Hattie and said, “Hattie you know we’re eating lunch today…we’ll have dessert later.”
“Oh I know Lillian, but I’ve decided that I’ll have dessert first and then if I still want lunch I’ll order cheesecake with strawberries. You know it’s good to get fruit in for the digestive system.”
Lillian just stared thinking Miss Hattie had gone off her senior rocker.
Hattie just smiled when they brought out the delicious double stacked brownie, oozing with fudge sauce and whipped cream. The other ladies looked on with envy has they picked at their chicken salad and lettuce.
“Well.” thought Nadine, “maybe dessert first isn’t such a bad idea.”
“But, the purple hair, well that’s a bit much.”
Miss Hattie just took her last decadent bite of dessert when the restaurant’s door opened and there stood her old beau from sixty years ago…Hoke Archer, he was just a few years younger. Hoke looked her way, smiled, and walked towards her direction.
“Miss Hattie,” he said, “almost didn’t recognize you in your red hat. How are you?”
“Fabulous,” she replied as she patted her purple hair, a flirty but effective gesture.
Hoke spoke saying, “Well, Hattie would you like to join me later for dessert and coffee, to catch-up on old times?”
“I’d like that Hoke,” she replied.
As he was turning to be seated, Hoke looked back and said,” I like your hair.”
Miss Hattie just grinned and thought, “As I grow old I will wear purple.”
