VOICE OF DARKNESS
You know my voice. You know it quite well. I am your fear. Some of you would know me as your greatest fear. You are lost—lost forever in the pitch-black darkness of sin. There are no exits, there is no way out. I have driven you to a place where I completely have you in my sinister grip. Don’t try to run. Don’t try to hide. I know you, because I see you cringe. I see you tossing and turning in your sleep. I rule your nightmares--and because you are deprived of sleep--I rule you. You hate the darkness, and that’s good, that’s good--
(A single, thin spotlight, white shines stage right, breaking the darkness. Now we hear a pleasant, inviting male voice.)
VOICE OF LIGHT
Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
VOICE OF DARKNESS
NO! I know some of you heard that voice. Don’t listen to Him! He will lead you astray. He will lead you into the bondage of religious rules and ridiculous regulations and heinous hypocrisy. Rather, give in to your rage. Yes; feel the anger surging through you. Stay here with me in the dark. Do you feel it? That’s it; now let it seethe inside your sin-stained soul. Let it drag you into deep, dark depression. There are no exits; there is no way out—
(White spotlight wider, stronger.)
VOICE OF LIGHT
I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
VOICE OF DARKNESS
NO! NO! There is NO WAY OUT. Don’t you see? He’s lying to you. LYING. He doesn’t care about you. Only foolish fanatics follow Him! All they want from you is your money, right? Every time they see you, they ask you for your money. Ah-hah! That’s it—give in to your resentment. Let me send oppression into your life. See, doesn’t it feel safe to be trapped? Trapped in darkness. Trapped, trapped, trapped! Ignore that Light. Just ignore it—
(Another thin spotlight, white appears. This time we hear children singing.)
VOICES OF LIGHT
Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.
VOICE OF DARKNESS
Arrrgh! Don’t listen to them. They are just brain-washed Sunday School kids who’ve been led astray. You grown-up adults know better. You know that The Bible is NOT at all true. You know that men made up most of the fairy tale stories in it. That’s it—you’re beginning to doubt again. Ah-hah! Give in to those feelings of bitterness—remember how your parents MADE you go to church or to temple, even when you didn’t want to? Remember how they forced you to go through all the religious nonsense? Yes…yes…that’s it, that’s it. Now you’re being blinded by my darkness again. Ignore that Light. It’s misguided—
(Another thin spotlight, white appears; and grows strong—and red--as the Voice of Light speaks.)
VOICE OF LIGHT
For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
VOICE OF DARKNESS
Lies! All lies! Do you—a reasonable modern thinking, enlightened, worldly adult--believe all this nonsense? Do you? Come on! Stay here with me! Stay here in the darkness. Stay here—
(woman in the center of the audience, suddenly stands and raises both hands; all spotlights shine on her)
VOICE OF DARKNESS
No! No! Don’t listen to the Light. Don’t go toward the Light--
WOMAN IN AUDIENCE
HELLLLLP! HELP! Help me… I can’t stand it! I can’t stand it anymore! What must I do to be saved from this horrible darkness?
VOICE OF LIGHT
You must be born again.
VOICE OF DARKNESS
NO! NO!!!
(All lights on.)
VOICE OF LIGHT
YES! Repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, and to your children.
(Immediately the woman in the audience falls to her knees, and begins praying, repenting.)
