Often in the spring days, before the flowers wilted in the heat of summer, young couples would stroll hand in hand, or perhaps even entwined amidst the lovely fragrances.
Two young ladies strolled down the path, chattering as perhaps all such said will do. They were dressed nearly identically in pale denim flared jeans, complimented by a pink blouse, however one seemed to have chosen the jeans in a size too small and have left undone several buttons on her blouse.
From my vantage point under a wide brimmed straw hat, knelt beside the flowers carefully removing strangling weeds, I noticed two young men approaching the girls and pause to chat.
Eager to receive his attention, the girl found in the tight jeans seemed to trip over her feet and fall against him and heedless of the border they both stumbled into the flowers crushing under their feet the delicate petals of the blooms and dare I say, possibly even their innocence as they remain close by.
Unaware of their friends untoward behaviour the daughter wearing the better fitting garments, seemed to embrace the garment of innocence and feminity as she spoke words to the young man gazing towards her, laughing in reply to an unheard phrase.
Perhaps it was an ordinary scene for the onlooker, but to my father’s heart it seemed as though one had crushed the garment of innocence in her stumble towards the border of the gravel path, while the other had draped it about her shoulders in the perfect semblance of beauty, and I remembered how my wife had once met me in these very same gardens, sixty-two years ago.
