As you move on, from year to year.
You have always shown me Jesus,
Reminding me that He is near.
When our paths first came together,
A kinship seemed unlikely, odd –
So young was I, untamed, undone –
And you so wise, and close to God.
Your eyes were bright with light and love,
Your steps so lively, quick, and strong.
You made me long for what you had,
Sparked my desire to come along.
You opened up to me God’s book,
And showed me gently how to live;
To love my family and friends,
With simple willingness to give.
I watched you facing strain and stress,
On days when no one understood.
And yet you faltered not at all,
Just telling me, “Our God is good.”
I saw you lose your lifelong mate,
beloved, precious, oh, so dear.
You walked with him through that dark vale,
Assuring him, “Our God is here.”
Your steps are somewhat slower now,
eyesight is growing dim with age;
You sense the twilight closing in,
Much like the curtain on a stage.
But through your shell of “outer man”
So plainly destined to decay,
I clearly see that “inner man”
In shining, glorious display.
I’m watching you, dear precious friend,
As I myself walk year by year;
I’ll try to pass along your glow,
And spread the word, “Our Lord is near.”
My I leave that touch of Jesus
You have so freely shared with me,
A life well-lived, joy and gladness,
A path so plain that all may see.
