Throwing open the door, Katy walked with loud, heavy steps into the rehearsal room. Once eight-out-of-nine-pair-of-eyes were on her, she gave the door a big shove. The impact of the closing door caused props to fall off storage shelves.
"Uhm, hello Katy. Nice to see you too," Shawn said, the only one who didn't bother to look up when she entered the room. He was too busy memorizing his lines.
Hitting her hand on the table causing the stage actors to jump, she displayed a half smile, half sneer on her face as if she was pleased with the effect.
"Sheesh, Katy! Why not give us all heart attacks?" Brittany snapped. "What IS your problem, girl?"
Leaning her hands on the table to bring her closer to the others, Katy looked at one face and then another, her black eyes flicking tongues of fire in the direction of her peers. After she made eye contact with everyone but Shawn, who was still looking intently at his script, she spoke.
"What is my problem you ask? You really want to know? Fine, here's my problem. You guys are my problem."
"Okay, I'll bite," Brittany responded. "Please, Katy, why are we your problem?"
Katy, with hands on hips and still leaning forward, answered, "For starters, I've been told by our director, Frank, that ya'll don't think I can act. You think I'm too sterile, I don't show enough emotion. 'Don't just say you're mad. Show it, show it,' he told me."
Walking around the table, Katy stopped in front of Shawn who was desperately trying to ignore her.
"Is it true you think I'm a bad actress?" she asked. "I believe the exact quote was 'an emotionless bore'. I was told you think I'm incapable of showing want I to convey."
Kneeling down in front of him, Katy snatched his script away, forcing him to look her in the eyes. "What-gives-you-the-right-to-say-that-about-me?" Katy demanded, wiping wet streaks from her face. "What-gives-you-the-right-to-jeapordize-my-position-with-this-troupe?"
Burying her face in her hands, Katy's shoulders began shaking, sniffles coming from within her hands. Shawn awkwardly patted her on the shoulder. His arched eyebrows and wild eyes begged the others for help.
Brittany snickered from the head of the table. "Okay, Katy. We get it, you're a little miffed. Lighten up."
Using the table as support, Katy rose from the floor. Slowly, Katy turned toward Brittany, her nostrils flaring, her face crimson, her breathing shallow.
"Lighten up? Is that all you have to say for yourself?" Katy exploded while walking slowly towards Brittany. "This coming from the girl who instigated the meeting with the director?"
Poking Brittany in the chest and forcing her to back into a storage cupboard, Katy asked, "Tell me, Brit, how should I feel right now? You could have at least talked with me first. Do you know how much it hurt to hear all of this from Frank?"
Brittany gave a weak shrug while removing Katy's poking finger from her chest. "You're right, Katy. As a friend, I should have come to you."
Trying to brush away the rivulets of tears falling from her face onto her hands, Katy took a shaky breath. Rubbing her hands together as if the tears were lotion, Katy looked at her colleagues while choking out, "Go-good new-news, guys! You don't have to worry about me ruining your precious play. I've al-al-already resigned." Throwing her hands in the air she plopped into a chair.
"Whoa!" Shawn said while massaging the nape of his neck. "We didn't mean for you take it this far. We only wanted you to live up to your potential."
"Well then, I do have one more thing to say to you before I walk out that door one final time." Katy's shoulders began shaking again, but this time from the laughter coming deep within her body.
"Gotcha!" she yelled while pumping her right hand into the air. "I got you guys, I got you good!"
"Huh? You mean?" Brittany asked on behalf of the other stunned actors. "Wow! That WAS good!"
Katy made a bow in front of her admiring fans.
