Maria Moretti watched her son from a distance and wondered if this crush would fade over time. Constance was a lovely girl, but she didn’t appear to have much in common with her son. In fact, they appeared to be living in different worlds. Constance was a rising star in the fast-paced world of designer fashion and Jonathan was opening his own financial consulting business. While Jonathan engrossed himself in endless computations, equations, and statistical correlations, Constance strutted up and down runways all over Paris, Milan, and Rome.
Even when Constance was home from Europe, she still had community service requirements to fulfill as a beauty title holder. It was hard to keep track of her schedule because she was always in and out of church attending different events across the state. She would suddenly show up out of the blue, at a church service or a community event. Maria was a little concerned about that. She wanted Jonathan to fall for someone with a relationship with Jesus Christ, and at the least, someone a little more committed to attending church on a regular basis. She didn’t want her son to end up with someone just because she was nice and pretty. Relationships go much deeper than that. She knew she was being an overprotective mother but she didn’t want her son to compromise his faith for someone who hasn’t clearly defined her own.
One night, Maria felt the need to pray. She knelt down and prayed to God for a spiritual release from fear and worry. She did not want to feel trapped by those negative emotions anymore. She just wanted to love her family and be there for them. She called out for peace and it fell upon her before she stood back up. The next day, Maria decided to let her son make his own decisions and she would encourage and support him.
In the meantime, her church created a dynamic youth ministry to hold the young people’s interest in church long enough to keep them coming back. The youth minister established creative activities such as engaging community service projects every single weekend. The next event was a community-wide car wash with free car washes for single parents. It turned out to be a big hit.
That day, Constance arrived with her standard beauty queen uniform: tiara and sash. She was much more than just a pretty face because she successfully recruited twenty car owners to kick off the event. They arrived on time with horns blaring in excitement. Leading the caravan was a popular radio talk host in his bright red Hummer. After a brief photo opportunity, Constance tossed her tiara and sash in the trunk and returned with a bucket and a sponge ready to work. She was like a breath of fresh air which made it harder for Jonathan to keep his eyes off of her.
Later that night, after a Christian concert, Constance dedicated her life to Christ. She spent years walking up and down the fashion runways of the world, but now she faced with the most important runway of her life: answering the call of salvation by walking down the aisle toward the Pastor. Maria stood on the front row and could not hold back her own tears as she watched her future daughter-in-law make the most important decision of her life.
