I felt cold and a seatbelt buckle jutted into my side, but I lay still on the back seat of my cousin‘s Ford Explorer, trying to focus on her questions. “Do you want three pieces of chicken, or five? What do you want to drink? Do you want fries? Do you want apple dippers? Do you want sauce for your chicken?”
It was a struggle to hear the questions over the screaming pain in my torso. It was even harder to find the answers. In my weakened condition they felt like trick questions in a brutal interrogation, and I hoped that each answer would be the one to satisfy my cousin and make the questions stop.
When I came up with an answer, I would make a thumbs-up or thumbs-down sign, or scribble a word or two in a notebook. Speaking, I had learned the hard way, was out of the question due to my injury.
I ended up with a shake, fries and a lot of chicken, but had to abandon the meal after several bites because I was very thirsty and couldn’t get the thick shake to come out through the straw. It was just as well. The cold of the shake would have increased the pain anyway.
My cousin is no brutal interrogator, of course. She was driving me to the hospital and trying to make me as comfortable as possible.
Two weeks and a day have passed. The pain has lessened and my body is gaining strength. I no longer feel cold even in a hot room, as my body is better able to regulate its temperature. Concentrating to read or write is still very difficult, and I write this with the help of frequent rest breaks. I still do not talk, or get out of bed for more than a few minutes at a time. I do not know what is damaged in my body. I do not know how long I will be injured or whether I will need to adjust to a permanent disability. I hope the CT scan scheduled for next week will answer some questions. I do know that God is in control, and I am learning “in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” (Phil. 4:11B, KJV)
