“I do. And you, Miriam?”
“Oh, yes. I hear the entire angelic realm volunteered!”
“I don’t blame them.”
“Even the choir, they’ve been singing praises around the throne for thousands of years and they want to go!”
“I heard they will get to go, something about needing their voices to help with ours,” a smile crosses Nathaniel’s face hearing Miriam laugh.
“That means heaven will be vacant of angels. Who will take care of things if all of us go?”
“Don’t you think the Father can handle it?” Echoes of laughter fill heaven as they try to picture a scene that God can’t handle without them.
“But He’ll be here all alone.”
“Alone? Miriam, God is everywhere. He’ll be here and also there when His Son is born.”
“How true. Where is your assignment?”
“Just above Orion’s belt.”
“Mine, too. We’ll be together. Just imagine how bright the night sky will be with all of us up there!”
“There’s no moon for tonight and the sky is clear. God has thought of everything.”
Nathaniel realizes what he’s just said, sheepishly looks over to Miriam to see a twinkle in her eye.
Gabriel signals it’s time for all angels to take their positions as the sun is going behind the horizon.
In a flash heaven is empty, except for the presence of the Father.
“Miriam, what do you think the shepherds are thinking right now?”
“Let’s listen.”
-----
“John, does there seem to be more stars out than usual?”
“I noticed that, too, and it’s not really very dark yet.”
Matthew interjects, “Something weird is going on.”
“What to do mean?”
“Well, I don’t know. That star we’ve been watching for months is no longer moving and now all these stars. There’s something going on.”
Looking east to the brightest star in the sky, the one they’ve been watching is stationary over Bethlehem.
“Well, if anything is going to happen it will be in Bethlehem.”
“I think you’re right but as shepherds we’ll be the last to know!”
All the stars seem to twinkle brightly at once, heads swing upward.
“Weird.”
"Really weird. I’m getting a little concerned here.”
Light baths the hills and surrounding area; so bright it seems to penetrate their very bodies. Above them hovers the most spectacular being they’ve ever seen.
“Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.”
Breathless, at least they thought they were every star in the sky seems to descend rapidly towards them. Too stunned to run, yet fearful of being annihilated if they stay, they remain frozen in place, watching in amazement as the scene unfolds. Music, never before heard on earth, envelopes them.
Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace, good will towards men!
The jubilant angels wing back into the heavenly realm and the sky’s lights returned to normal. With the scene still dancing in their memory and heavenly music vibrating in their ears, the shepherds are left staring into space, unsure of reality or their sanity.
Someone, as if thinking out loud, “We ought to go on into Bethlehem.”
Gazes slowly shift to one another. Did that really happen? One turns, starts towards Bethlehem. Before any of them realizes, they are running, almost flying, in their haste to see the redemption of the world, the Lord of Host, the Bright Morning Star, the Light of the world…a babe lying in a manger.
-----
“Miriam, did you see the size of those shepherds’ eyes?”
“Yes, they were so big the reflection of our light almost blinded me!”
Joy fills the heavens…and in the dimly lit stable.
