The countdown starts for Christmas in the middle of July,
Though, yes, some shoppers give the bright displays an evil eye,
And grumble that Thanksgiving is the proper time to start,
But many others toss some tags and gift wrap in the cart.
In August, families flock to stores to purchase school clothes, then
Before they know what's happened, snowman lights are added in.
September's trip for school supplies, besides the usual things,
Will garner dancing Santas and some dandy garland strings.
Beside October's costumes are some brightly colored balls;
It never is too early to prepare to deck the halls.
With pumpkin pies and turkey, it is time to stock supplies
Of sweets for stockings, which if eaten sooner's no surprise.
While turkey dinner's settling, grab paper, pen, recline,
And scrawl the list of sales; wake up early; stand in line
And hope to be one fast enough to snatch what's to be had
Of small amounts of treasures, leaving many hopping mad.
December means packed parking lots with tempers prone to flare,
And expletives competing with the music in the air.
Cashiers announce the totals, process payments, paste a smile,
Awaiting just one day away from shopping's mad'ning trial.
So fin'ly Christmas Eve arrives; procrastinators crush
And push and shove to grab the perfect gift, then home they rush.
It isn't really over, though, as any merchant learns,
The countup starts the 26th, with all of the returns.
