The Final Pause

MaryAnn said, “Vickie, please stop laughing at me, you know I don’t understand why I put the box of butter in the oven and the skillet in the refrigerator.

Kathy said, “Mom I am not laughing at you, I am laughing with you. I just don’t understand why you keep calling me Vickie. I am Kathy; you know the pleasingly plump one with red hair and freckles. Remember Vickie, the super model from Hollywood. No resemblance mom, absolutely no resemblance”!

Mom said, “I am so sorry Kathy, I don’t know why I am doing all these strange things.
It is like a mist is growing over my mind”.

Letting her body slump peacefully into the sofa MaryAnn said, “Please Kathy, go get me a wet wash cloth. It is so hot in here the sweat is pouring off me. I feel like my arms are burning and my feet are tingling. My head is spinning and my heart is racing a hundred miles a minute. If I don’t have a heart attack, it won’t be my fault”.

Kathy ran for the bathroom, running the cold water over the wash cloth thinking about her mom who had always been a rock of strength and character. She ran back inside the parlor, gently placed the wash cloth oh her head, and prayed for a quick recovery.

Five minutes later, MaryAnn was the picture of health, exactly like she had never been sick. She raised her head, speaking to Kathy in teasing tones, she said, “It is so nice to see you in the middle of the day. Is there something you need or did you just get the urge to see your dear wonderful mom”?

Kathy said, “No mom, I don’t need anything, but you did invite Vickie and I for lunch today”.

MaryAnn stopped and took a long hard look at Kathy, total desperation came over her face, as she said, “oh I am so sorry Kathy. We really have to hurry and pull something together; Vickie only has an hour for lunch”.

Kathy quickly consoled her mom and started looking in the cabinet for something to fix for a hot nourishing meal. Her fingers pulled out two cans of chicken noodle soup. She found the kettle, snapped the lid on the soup and threw it on the burner. Hurriedly, she found the refrigerator with lots of goodies. Soup and sandwiches were their favorites, especially thick sliced hunks of Eckrich Bologna. Her fingers struck pay dirt as she found three slices of American cheese, lunch was surely on.

They sat cozily inside that county blue kitchen talking in hurried tones over lunch.
Kathy shared with Vickie the episodes of the early morning. MaryAnn was silent, but the thoughts inside her mind were of a distant land where the milk and honey flows.

Vickie said, “Mom I am not going back to work. We are going to visit your doctor”.

MaryAnn, Kathy and Vickie sat there holding hands as all the reports came in one by one. Finally the doctor was sitting there in front of them. Her voice was cheerful but yet with a tiny touch of sadness. She said, “MaryAnn, I hate to stick a label on this one, but it is my responsibility to tell you the truth. Have you ever heard of the change of life”?

Vickie looked at Kathy; MaryAnn looked at both of them and they let out long breaths of relief at the same time. Vickie and Kathy took their mother in their arms as the tears flowed down each cheek.

That doctor watched in total amazement as three grown woman stood to their feet, huddled in a circle and let out a cheer at the top of their lungs:
“ONE FOR ALL AND ALL FOR ONE”!

The doctor looked at them then exclaimed. “I see this is one case that I will not worry about”.

As they exited the doctor’s office, the sun was a brighter shade of autumn 2008 than any autumn they had ever seen. The conversation turned to a lighter side as Kathy said, “Mom, remember that challenge word of the week on Faithwriters.com that you are having so much trouble with, you know that word, “snap”. Vickie chimed in with her two cents worth, “oh yes mom, now you have the perfect subject”.

A new cheer exploded in the car as two voices rose to the heavens, “Go mom go, Go mom go”!

Sounded more like Alzheimer's than the change of life. Good descriptions. Nicely done.

Good story and article on things that affect and change people.
Sounded more serious than the change of life but loss of memory, I believe, is a symptom of it. Just a severe case! I'm glad us fellows don't have to put up with mood swings. ha ha!! Thanks.

I am so very glad that you two gentlemen took the time to comment on something as serious as the change of life.

I thank God for you all who take the time to sit down and read plus comment.
