“It’s how we eat, Young One. We are snapping turtles; therefore, we snap.”
“But it’s so aggressive,” she protested. “Why can’t we just gently unfurl our tongues, like the frogs and lizards? Or trap our food in a web, like spiders? ”
“Oh, Chelydra, I cannot say. All I know is the Creator has made us this way. Our beak-like jaws are perfect for the sorts of food we eat.”
“But why do we have to eat those things? Why can’t we be vegetarians, like our cousin tortoises?”
“Oh, my dear child,” laughed the Old One. “You like to eat worms, tadpoles and fish as well as any other turtle.”
She could not argue with that. She sighed. “I just wish it could be different. Snapping just seems so …aggressive.”
”Better aggressive than hungry, I always say,” the Old One concluded.
Chelydra couldn’t argue with that, either. “I truly don’t want to be hungry. So, after all, I guess I must thank the Creator for snapping. It’s certainly a paradox.”
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a large school of minnows, and her eyes gleamed in anticipation. She laughed, as she concluded, “I guess this paradox can wait until after lunch.”
