“Are you sure you can do this job Jenna? Do you not have a husband and children to think of?”
“My husband passed away years back, we never had any child but I take care of any child God wills to come my way as my own.”
“You’re old enough to be my mother; would you stand it if I spoke to you in a manner displeasing to you?” Jenna watched as this young lady threw a glass of whiskey down her throat. It was true what she heard, Madame DuPont had a drinking problem.
“Madame, by God’s grace, I will do my job to your satisfaction, I only ask that you allow me attend my church services.”
“Hmmn…you’re a Christian? What do you folks do at that place? Everyone keeps talking about the preacher over there.”
“We learn the word of God and it transforms our lives.”
“Is that right?”
“Yes Madame.”
“Well,” she spoke fast.” I am quite impressed by your open declaration of your faith. Perhaps you’ll do well working with me. When can you start? There’s a little room where you’ll stay. I’ll pay you 30 pounds a week, and will provide dinner every night. You have a day off once a week, perhaps which would be your church day? Anyway it all falls into place if you agree with my terms, so what will it be Jenna?” The conditions were satisfactory. “I could start tomorrow Madame.”
“Good. See you then.”
Jenna moved into the little room, and after three months, it turned to her haven. She would pray and read her bible; many times feeling the Lord’s presence and hearing Him speak. One night her eyes opened at 3am and wouldn’t close. She tried to get back to sleep but for five minutes couldn’t. She sat up.
“What is it Lord? Is there something you would like me to know or do?”
“Pray for Madame DuPont.”
“As always Lord.” Jenna thought about how she had grown to love the young lady inspite of her wayward lifestyle and prayed she would accept the Lord sometime soon. Due to Jenna’s love, Madame DuPont had taken so much to her. Their’s was a cordial relationship that could pass for mother and daughter.
She always prayed for her. She had no choice. Any mother would pray for her child. But the Lord had never woken her up in the middle of the night to pray for her. A thought came to her.
“Is she in trouble Lord?”
Instantly, she saw a picture of Madame DuPont on the floor, in a pool of her blood, the knife by her side showed she had committed suicide. Jenna gasped.
“Hurry Jenna, before it’s too late.”
She moved with speed, running and praying at the same time. “Keep her safe Lord, protect her.” Reaching her room, she knocked sharply.
“Madame, I need to speak to you! Now!” The door remained tightly shut. She tried to open it but it didn’t budge. She knocked harder. “Madame! Please!”
The door opened slightly and Jenna forced it open. She ran to Madame DuPont on the floor. She was bleeding from her left wrist, the knife lay beside her. Tears came to Jenna’s eyes.
“What have you done?!” she cried repeatedly as she laid her on the bed, treated her wound and stayed beside her till the sunlight seeped in through the window.
Madame DuPont finally opened her eyes. “He left me Jenna, in shame and embarrassment. How could he? I loved him.” Her whole body shook as the tears poured from her eyes. Jenna held her close and comforted her. “Shh…It’s okay. He’s a married man Madame, your union with him was unworthy and headed for destruction.”
“How did you know I was…?”
“The Lord told me.”
Tears filled DuPont’s eyes again.
“Just how special am I to you?”
“Like you were my own child, Madame.”
“Little wonder.”
“Little wonder what?”
“You’re the mother I never had.”
