Rickie smiled sheepishly at his aunt. She knew him too well. “Well… There’s this girl…”
Miriam smiled.
“Sister… does God ever talk to you?”
“Yes, all the time.”
“I mean, do you actually hear His voice?”
Miriam raised a white eyebrow at her favorite nephew. “Twice, after your Grandpa Browne died. I heard a voice, in my head, telling me to, ‘Give Him A Hug’--your Uncle Mort. But that voice in my head? It wasn’t my voice.
I heard it later that day, too. It said, ‘Play With Him.’ I was watching your cousin Joseph playing on the floor, my Godson. But since he was playing happily by himself, I went and made dinner. That’s one of my deepest regrets Rickie--not listening to that Voice. Oh, sure, I spent some quality time with Joey later… But I didn’t obey the voice--not right away. I never heard it again--not like that anyway.”
“You think it was God’s voice?”
“Well, It didn’t have Grandpa Browne’s accent. I suppose it could’ve been an angel... Tell me Rickie…”
“Well, this girl… She’s great. We’re just friends, so far. She only recently got her annulment. She’s divorced--and quite a bit older than me--and she has kids, two boys--nice kids. But she says she’s probably too old to have more… And… she’s white.”
Sister Miriam nodded.
“I think she’s the one Sister, the one for me, but how do I know for sure?”
Miriam just looked at him. He still hadn’t gotten to the part about the voice.
“Okay, so I was thinking about all this the other day and… I heard this voice in my head. And like you said, It wasn’t my voice, my normal talking to myself voice. It said, ‘You will have a daughter and you will name her Magdalena.’ It was real slow, kind of commanding like.”
“Is that my answer Sister? It didn’t mention Missy--that’s her name, Melissa. It didn’t mention her, but I had been thinking about her… And who else could it be? I… I just don’t know…”
“She is of the faith?”
“Yes.”
“Interesting… Wait here a moment.” Sister Miriam disappeared upstairs. She returned a few minutes later holding a small velvet box. She handed it to Rickie. “It was your mother’s.”
Rickie opened the black box. Inside was a beautiful diamond solitaire.
“I was keeping it for you, until… Well, until the time was right. You should have it, just in case…”
Rickie smiled. He got up and hugged his aunt--his last remaining living relative. “Thank you Sister.”
“I will pray for you, and for your Melissa--and for the baby… A baby girl…!”

“Missy dear, good to see you,” Dr. Earle eyed his niece. She didn’t normally stop by unannounced, in the middle of the day, at his office... “Everything all right…?”
“Yeah, um, fine, great… Do you have a minute…?”
“For you? Always… What’s on your mind?”
“Well… Do you think I’m too old to have more kids?”
Her uncle laughed. “Annulment came through, eh? You’re not itching to remarry already are you?”
Missy laughed, “No way. But… there is someone, kind of… just a friend of course, but… We’ve been spending a lot of time together, for a while now… And, well, he’s quite a bit younger than me, and…”
Doctor Earle eyed his watch. “Out with it Missy--the whole story--I’m sorry, but I have a repeat c-section at 11:00.”
“Well… I… I think God wants me to have a baby with this guy.”
“…He does?”
“I know it sounds weird, but I had this dream… almost a vision really. But… I don’t understand. I mean, I believe... But… How? And when? It didn’t really say, ya know?”
“Maybe it will become clearer in time?”
“But that’s just the thing, how much time do I have?”
“Well, if it’s God’s will, the timing doesn’t matter. It’ll happen when He’s ready. You have to trust Him, Melissa.”
‘Yeah, that’s kind of what I figured…”
“Did you tell him, the guy?”
“Oh, no, not yet… Don’t want to scare him off, ya know?” Missy laughed. “Maybe tonight… He’s stopping by after work…” She smiled at the thought. I really do love him… And didn’t I always say I wanted to have three kids…?
