That filled my heart with such insight,
That now with you I’d like to share
The lesson learned, if I dare.
I’ll speak of familiar sinners,
All guests at a special dinner.
Will you know some by their name?
Will you share with some their earthly pain?
The sinful crowd just seemed all wrong,
But then the angels sang a song
And ushered in the Prince of Peace
Who offered them a heavenly feast.
There’s the neighbor who was mean to me,
Scolding me daily when I was three.
I loved to pick her pretty flowers
Over which she toiled uncounted hours.
And then I spied a gentleman caller
When in his prime, he was much taller.
He was arrogant and had selfish ways,
He was a lonely man in his aging days.
And there’s Miss Fancy Roving Eyes
A reputation earned I once surmised,
She married rich, then married well,
But I thought she died and went to hell.
Who’s that standing in the hall?
Why it’s that gossip, Miss Appall,
Mercy me, can this be right?
Joe Judgmental is in my sight.
And now a smiling face I ponder
A stranger speaks to me in wonder,
“I didn’t expect to find you here,
You were always so unkind my dear.”
“I beg your pardon, have we met?
A smile like yours I’d not forget.”
“Oh yes, but it was some years past
My appearance then made you gasp.”
“I was a beggar dressed in dirty clothes,
You snickered and then turned up your nose.
You felt your money made you better
Than the bearded man in the rumpled sweater.”
Can you imagine my surprise,
I spanned the crowd with puzzled eyes -
Miss Haughty’s head was bending down
To receive a stunning, dazzling crown.
And then our Savior took His place
And we were filled with His grace.
He asked if we remembered when
He died for us and all our sins.
The room grew silent--no one stirred,
We listened to His every word.
A new heart He gave to each,
His love for all we vowed to teach.
And then I woke still young, not old
And sorted through this story told.
I’ll not point fingers anymore,
Instead I’ll count my blessings more.
Ecclesiastes 12:14 God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad. (NLT)
