“Are you sure he really, really cares? She asked looking at me with the most serious look she could create. “Will he still desire you in twenty years like he does now?” Does he really know your worth? Can he keep up with the standard?” the endless barrade of questions kept coming from Lami as she asked about the man I intended to marry. They were very irrelevant questions as far as I was concerned. Choices had been made, dates had been fixed. It was all settled. The issue of uncertainty had already been dealt with. But, I answered her every question in the affirmative. For some of them I answered “yes” and for others, I answered “of course he does, if he didn’t he wouldn’t be marrying me!”
“Okay darling! I’m with you all the way!” she said when she finally asked her last question, in a very satisfied way. After lunch, we kissed goodbye and I went back to the office.
My evening that day was a bit busy, I had a brief meeting in church after work, after which I was to drop by to see this “husband-to-be” of mine.He was to come home with me as we were to have dinner with my mother.
After my meeting, I dropped by and the house was empty and locked. I didn’t have the keys on me. Thank God for mobile phones. I dialled his number.
“I am so sorry" his voice filtered through the airwaves, "I’m in a meeting. Will be with you soon ok?”
I had to wait. The weather changed. It began to drizzle. I needed cover. The garage was open. It was very convenient to wait there especially when the heavy downpour started. I knew he would arrive in the next five minutes.
Then I wondered. What would his reaction be when he drives in and finds me waiting. Will he stroll towards me and say “hello dearie, just understand,” or will he say “I’m really sorry” and expect it to end there? or will he do the big one? run towards me, look apologetic for keeping me waiting and usher me sweetly into the house? I heard the car. He drove in and parked by the side of the house so I couldn’t see him or the car. I waited. In twenty seconds, I heard footsteps. The steps were very quick. Someone wanted to run but couldn’t due to the heavy down pour and so did the possible best; a slow run mixed with quick walking. He appeared in the garage with his arms wide open ready for a hug, an apologetic smile and a huge umbrella. I melted into his arms, I was undeniably impressed. Did I expect anything less?
Of course not.
And that’s exactly how God is.
He never lets us down; His love is undying and unflinching. He is the same, so constant in love. He’s always there for us and helps cover any lapse that may occur in our relationship with Him.
I was happy my fiancé passed the test. I still am. It showed that he desired my wholesome happiness. However, I am happier knowing that the greater one whose love for me cannot be compared to anything else has also passed the test of His love and desire for me. Jesus is the price He paid. No one really desires and loves man like Jesus does. He is the answer to the test of God’s love for mankind for He, Himself is Love.
So, whenever situations, circumstances, people or life in general pose those questions that make you wonder; “are you sure He really cares? Does He really desire you? Does He know your worth? Can He keep up with the standard?” Remember my story and remember that God is faithful and His desire for you and your happiness is simply and totally unquenchable.
