“Please get up before you get yourself all dirty,” Mom bends and gently touches his head.
She gives him her sternest voice. Yet, she admires his spontaneous curiosity.
“He is so much like you,” Mom mutters to her husband beside her.
Dad smiles.
Adam stuffs the pebble into his pant pocket and runs ahead of his parents. Adam tugs hard with both hands on the big glass door of the church allowing his parents’ entrance. He struggles to keep the door open while he maneuvers his way in.
Successfully inside, Adam feels a great sense of accomplishment. His smile broadens and his step livens.
“You sure are growing up fast, Adam,” his Sunday School teacher greets after watching him manhandle that door.
“Thanks, Mr. Brown,” Adam’s shoulders square.
“I’m headed to the classroom. How would you like to go with me?”
Mr. Brown and Adam march downstairs to the classroom.
Later, while Mr. Brown teaches about Jesus, Adam pokes his hand inside his pocket and carefully fumbles with the pebble. He slowly pulls it outside his pocket enough to admire it without anyone noticing.
“No, do not stop them from coming to me,” Mr. Brown’s voice raises.
It startles Adam until he realizes Mr. Brown dramatizes something Jesus said to his disciples.
Adam learns that Jesus speaks harshly to the disciples because they are trying to keep the kids from running to Jesus. Jesus tells the kids to come and pauses from his important business to spend time with them.
“That’s amazing,” the words pop out of Adam’s mouth.
“Yes, it is, Adam,” Mr. Brown agrees. “Jesus loves to share time with you, too.”
Before Adam can ask, Mr. Brown explains when we choose to follow Jesus, we can spend time with him by reading the Bible and praying any time, day or night.
Adam sits quietly for a few more minutes. He remains seated until all the other kids in the class file out.
“Mr. Brown,” Adam says after he is sure all the other kids are far away, “Jesus sounds like someone I could follow, but I’m not sure I know how.”
“It sounds like you’re well on your way already.”
Then, Mr. Brown sits next to Adam and shares how to make that happen.
