Harry felt an array of emotions as he stood in the empty living room looking down at the indentations left in the green threadbare carpet where the overstuffed sofa had always been. “I’m sure the first thing the new owners will do is tear up this old berber.”
“I know, this house is like a 1980s time capsule,” Greg said, placing the house keys on the kitchen counter.
They stood side by side looking out of the patio doors to the backyard. “Remember all the years we spent throwing ball and building snow forts?” Harry said.
Greg nodded and the room was quiet until Harry spoke again.
“I went to the cemetery the other day. It’s still strange seeing dad’s name on the headstone next to mom’s.”
“The last six months haven't been easy.”
“I have something to tell you. When I was cleaning out the attic a few weeks ago, I found a Bible. It was mom’s Bible.”
“Mom was agnostic. She never owned a Bible.”
“I think she got it when she was in the hospital. Her name is written on the inside cover, with a date - March 2001 - four months before she died.”
“Mom didn't believe in anything. She didn't even have a funeral service.” Greg said, as he walked down the hallway to the front door.
Harry followed him. “Maybe she did believe, but was too afraid to say anything. Dad would have been furious if he thought she believed in God. She probably didn't want to spend her last few months arguing with him.”
“Dad always said religion was for weak minded people and she agreed with him.”
“Maybe that changed when she found out her cancer was terminal.”
"How would a Bible get into our attic anyway."
"I found it in a box with some old clothes. Aunt Pam brought mom's things home after she died and put them in the attic. It must have been up there all this time."
“You’re delusional if you think she converted.”
“Why are you so bothered that she found God at the end of her life?”
“You don’t know if she found God. Why would she believe in a being who was letting her die, and taking her away from her family. Where was God when she was dying in hospice care?”
“He was with her and He was with us.”
Greg walked down the front steps. “Wow, it sounds like you have been reading the Bible."
“I have, and it has changed my life. For the first time I have peace in my heart.”
“You’re my only brother and I love you, but what you are saying goes against the type of person mom was. I just can’t accept it.”
“I respect that it’s a lot to take in. I don’t want this to come between us, but I believe I found the Bible for reason. It helped mom understand God and I think it’s helping me, too. I won’t discuss it with you anymore if that is what you want, but I won’t change my mind about mom’s conversion.”
“I need to go. I'll call you sometime next week," and he got into his truck.
Harry shut the front door of his old home. Knowing it would be the last time. He wished things had gone better with his brother but he still had hope and faith that one day Greg, too would find God.
