The wind gently stirred the many- colored leaves as they traded places with each other on the firm surface of the mountain. As the sunset was fading into darkness, little whisps of cotton- like clouds darted through the amber sky. They seemed to be chasing each other home before it became completely dark.
Melody sat beneath the towering pine tree gazing at this myriad of colors. The shadows, dancing back and forth, wanted to tell her a story hidden in the rocks for centuries. The wind strived to tell of whispering hope as it whistled through the branches. Her soul remembered the strains of that old hymn as the melody played in her heart.
“Whispers of Hope, oh how welcome thy voice…….” Hummed Melody. Tears started to come in droplets down her cheeks eroding her makeup, as they left trails In their wake.
Then like an evil spirit descending upon her mind, thoughts of disaster came in quick review. This day started out so beautifully. Steve, Melody’s fiance, asked her if she wanted to go hiking with him and some of his friends. They were going to tackle Mt. Hightower to see how far they could climb.
Being a very inexperienced mountain climber, Melody hesitated. She preferred to stay on level ground. However, after much self – arguing, she finally agreed.
Off they all tread with lunches, climbing gear and staunch hearts, singing, “Climb, Climb up sunshine mountain…”. At this moment they had smiles on their faces .
Everybody enjoyed the hike. Laughter and joking around made lunch enjoyable. While the group was having fun, Melody found some lovely flowers to pick. Having those flowers in hand, Melody spied some very different blossoms down the hill. Excitedly, she ran to where they were and picked them also. On and on she went picking and picking.
Suddenly, there was rustling among the leaves. Turning and looking intently at the spot where the leaves were moving, Melody saw a small Rattlesnake slivering toward her. Screaming as she fled , Melody ran back to the camp. Or did she?
Melody looked and listened, but no one answered. Running around in circles over and over, Melody found nothing. She called and called , but no answer. “ They went off without me,” cried Melody . “ Didn’t Steve miss me? Why would they leave me?”
Little did she know the ‘group’ was frantically searching the woods for any trace of Melody. They called and screamed over and over, but nothing. “It’s getting dark. Do you all have flashlights and compasses? We’ve got to keep looking, but we must not have anyone else get lost ,”ordered the leader.
Desperately lost, Melody found an old hollow tree and fell down at the base, exhausted. She looked in her backpack and found canvas ground cloth and some snacks.
“I’ve heard that you should stay calm and in one place when you are lost. Well I can sure stay in one place, but I’m not calm.” Melody began crying.
The sky was dark now and it was cold! Wrapping up in the ground cloth and eating a few snacks, Melody lay down under the tree.
The wind began blowing as she shivered in the cold. Suddenly, Melody felt a warm caress flowing around her body, but no one was there. Just as she felt that caress, the strains of the hymn she had running through her heart that morning, came again.
“Whispering Hope, oh how welcome Thy Voice…..”. Melody knew God was with her.
