As we step forward, I glance back
Through intertwined fingers
To consider the landscape behind.
The first glance and I wonder what you
Must have thought of me, eager
Sure of everything
But scared of something
We rose
Slow but steep
Our love click clacking along
Like a rollercoaster car
Til we paused, aloft
And spoke vows we wouldn’t keep
And we were certain that this must be
The pinnacle of love.
Then we left the amusement park.
And dove headlong below
As I hid from my demons
And you stood for both of us
Steadfast
While I ran.
Whimpering I returned
Furious and wounded,
And you picked me up
Even while I kicked.
A battle fought and won
And we kept stepping
And the fit became so snug
And I marveled at my good fortune
To have a man like you.
And I was sure, this is love.
And that strength you honed in adversity
Atrophied, soft
Complacency rose
Grace fell
We breathed the world’s breath and skipped back down
to the darker places.
The snug fit was suffocating
We were pointy elbows and bony knees
And bumping heads.
And you crawled and I ran
And I crawled and you ran
And falling, exhausted, we rolled toward one another,
And laughed at when
We thought the rollercoaster ride was real life.
With a glance back through intertwined fingers
The sheer cliffs and
Dangerous ravines of love lived
soften
And appear as
Rolling hills.
And we walk on.
