Outlining Santa and his sleigh,
Myriad lights blink on and off,
CD’s their carols play.
With angel lights the gardens glow,
From window shines a star,
And all mankind will come to see
This glory, from the car.
With ooh’s and aah’s appreciate
The artistry of night.
By day the colors dominate
The senses with delight.
But follow the star – that shining star –
Out to the dark hillside
Where shepherds once their flocks did keep
In folds their sheep did hide.
Tonight the shepherd sleeps at home,
His sheep lie far away,
Alpacas guard the clust’ring flocks
To keep the fox at bay.
He counts the dollars in his bank
Before he counts his sheep.
The poddy lamb’s the children’s pet –
For them to watch and keep.
But on those darkened fields of yore
The door of God ope’d wide,
The light of glory shining through
To bathe the dark hillside.
The praise of angels rent the skies
With comfort and great cheer,
“To you, in David’s town, is born
The Savior – Christ is here!”
The angel left, the door was shut.
The shepherds ran to see
If this great news was true indeed,
And stayed to bow the knee.
The wise men led by star so bright
It drew them from their land,
With gifts for the King it heralded
As they did understand.
We light our world electrically
But don’t dispel the dark.
We sing the song the angels sang,
But do we miss the mark?
The Light of the world is Jesus Christ –
He is the Christmas Light –
He opened the door of heavens grace
When He came that Christmas night.
He came with the gift of God’s great love
He came with His sinlessness,
He came to a race of sin-sick men
To heal, forgive and bless.
And we took that glorious Light of God
And hung Him upon a cross;
We bowed in a mock humility
To aggravate our loss.
“Father, your work is done!” He cried,
“Forgive them, for they don’t know…”
And we raise our cup of Yuletide cheer
In determined electric glow.
Once more the door will open wide,
The King of heaven will come
With His armies and with His ransomed bride,
To bring His people home.
No angel song, but a trumpet call.
No star, but a great earthquake
When His feet touch down on Olive’s Mount –
The earth will reel and shake.
He will rule the land with an iron rod,
The Lion of Judah now.
Ev’ry eye will see the Lamb of God
And every knee will bow.
Out on the hills of Bethlehem
The shepherd will guard his sheep,
Sing of the night when the Light of God
Was born while men were asleep.
The watchmen are keeping a watch tonight
As they read from the written word:
“He is coming!” they call with insistent voice,
“Are you ready to meet the Lord?”
