“But wwwwwwhhhhyyyyyyyy???”
All anyone in the house heard was the long, drawn-out loud wailing and crying of little Kammi. At 5 years old, her expertise in pouting and complaining was something to be, ahem, admired.
“So whatevers if its waining” she whimpered. “Daddy, why can’t I go out and play on da swings?”
“To emphasize her displeasure, she stuck out her quivering little lips as far as they would go. She stood there defiantly, arms crossed across her chest, in stark contrast to her brightness of her vibrant pink shirt, yellow and pink shorts and super white sneakers and stared up into her Daddy’s eyes
It was a perfect, late spring day, the sky seemed to be painted a perfect blue, and only whispers of gentle clouds, like flocks of contented sheep, meandered across the sky shepherded by perfect breezes. Yet the “flocks”, though gentle, carried rain brought in from a far southern storm, Kammi didn’t understand why being outside in the rain was such a bad thing, it was just “wet stuff” to her. And now that she was being denied a chance to be in it, she developed a sudden dislike for it.
“I HATE da rain Daddy, I DO!” she blurted out, as the crocodile tears streamed down her face.
Her Dad sighed deeply, slowly squatting down to her level and said to her, “Honey, I know you want to go play in the rain but it’s not good to be out in this much rain.” Besides, it’s not summer and warm enough for you to be splashing around in the cold rain.”
He wiped her tears with his fingertips, hugged her deeply then looked into her hazel eyes, “But remember what Mommy and I told you about the goodness of Jesus?”
She nodded.
“Well, he said, “Jesus is in charge of EVERYTHING and HE made everything, that HE reigns forever and ever, like the BEST KING of all eternity, remember that sweetheart?”
“Yes Daddy, she said.
“Even the rain is good, he continued. “It comforts the Earth, when it’s too hot, and makes the dry, hard ground nice and soft so plants can grow. The Earth doesn’t feel too good when its too hot all the time, and Jesus knows that, so the rain comes when it tells it too.”
“The rain washes everything nice and clean, when its been dirty and messy. The rain restores and makes things all brand new, when you look outside, you see new flowers growing and the green grass gets greener.”
“and Jesus even thinks about the animals and the birds in the woods, HE knows that they need lots of clean fresh drinking water and that they need a nice, refreshing bath, so HE gives them the rain too”
Kammi’s tears had begun to dry up as her father spoke to her. She nuzzled up close to her Daddy and as if it were story time, laid her head on his shoulder as he continued.
“See Kammi, Jesus knows all of our needs and all of Earth’s needs and all the creatures on the Earth, HE knows their needs too”.
“HE knows that we can’t always have sunshine, because we wouldn’t really appreciate it. AND…. HE knows that if it always rained, we wouldn’t like that either. So, HE gives us rain sometimes and sunshine sometimes…. either way, we need both, even if we don’t always like it.”
“I don’t want you to say ‘you Hate the rain’, but instead you should love it just like you love the sunshine, because it has a purpose in Jesus’ hands, ok?”
He held Kammi’s chin up gently underneath his thumb. She gazed deeply into her Daddy’s eyes and inhaled.
“I understand Daddy” she grinned. “Jesus loves us ALL so much and HE knows what we needs to have”
The rain was subsiding now, as if the Lord was slowly turning off a faucet. Kammi jumped up and down in glee, knowing it wouldn’t be too long before she could pull on her galoshes and play in the mud puddles.
She twirled around like a ballet dancer doing a pirouette. The sun had just begun to peek from behind a cloud and as if on command, a rainbow glimmered to life.
Kammi shrieked with happiness, “LOOK Daddy! Look at the pretty rainbow!”
“I know why it’s there Daddy!” she gushed.
“Why pumpkin?” her Daddy asked.
“Its cuz Jesus reigns!” she said as she rushed outside.
