One day, out of the blue, they enticed us to jump in the car and go for a ride. Of course we piled in, for the treats, but as the car pulled away and we watched the house disappear through the dusty back window, we all sensed something was askew. The last time we were together for a car ride, we left as four and returned as three - one of my sisters didn’t come back with us. So this day we were all on guard for any funny business and we were determined to not get separated.
We drove for a long time before I succumbed to the heat and the monotonous rhythm of the road. I was in a deep sleep when, all of a sudden, the driver slams on the brakes and sends us tumbling across the back of the car on top of one another. Still in a bit of a daze, the door flings open, somebody grabs me from behind and before I knew it, the three of us were standing on the side of the dirt road. Good timing I thought, but as I trotted over to the nearest weed to…uh…relieve myself our ”caretakers” got back in the car and drove off - in a hurry, covering us with a thick cloud of dust! My brother and sister and I tried to chase after it but it was no use. We weren’t sure what was happening so I did the only thing I knew to do, I put my nose to the ground, tried to catch a familiar scent, and set off toward the car. We would either catch up to it or come upon someone who could help us find our way home. We were in trouble – but at least we were together.
I would have given anything for some shade, but there were no trees in sight; no relief whatsoever. We must have walked for hours. Just as I thought my legs were about to give out, a bright yellow car passed us and pulled off the road just up ahead. I thought I was seeing things when a man in a big hat got out of the car and kneeled down to greet us. I used what seemed like my last bit of energy to run to him. After giving us some water, he invited us into his car. His genuine smile and warm tone put us all at ease almost immediately. He drove to the next town and pulled into this cute little abode, with green grass in the yard, and we have been here ever since.
The first day at our new home, the man in the big hat gave us our names. My name is Lucky, He calls my brother “Rex” and my sister “Tera” (I think it’s a play on words). I love our new caretaker, his kindness is overwhelming and it is only now, after our rescue, that I can see how bad of a situation we were in before. Here, there are no crates to confine us and no fences to keep us in the yard but I can assure you, we’re not going anywhere – there is nowhere else we would rather be.
*All Adoption (even pet adoption) is a rescue mission. To rescue a soul from a troubled situation and provide a second chance in a loving home is a beautiful reflection of God's love.
*1st John 3:1 (NIV) “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
