God never wastes words.
Everything he utters is true, it is relevant, and it is purposeful.
God never beats around the bush.
When reading the Bible, do you ever close your eyes to some words or phrases, not giving them a second thought? They are unimportant to you.
Maybe every so often you have a kind of subconscious thought after reading something, ‘So what?’, but you plough on with what you think are the important bits.
Many times through the years, the Lord has put his finger on a word or phrase that I have treated in that way. It is as if he said, “Hey, just have a look at that again!”
That happened to me several days ago. I was reading John’s Gospel in the New King James Version, and a sentence of only four words shone out in a new and striking way: “And it was night.”
I thought, ‘What’s the significance of those four very ordinary
words?’
Look at the scene. Eleven disciples of Jesus are together with him
sharing the Last Supper. By handing him a piece of bread dipped in
wine, Jesus identifies Judas as the one who would betray him to the Jewish religious leaders.
When Judas takes the piece of bread, Satan enters into him. Immediately, Jesus tells the traitor to go and do what he intends to do and to do it quickly.
“And it was night.”
It was an ominous moment.
Can you sense the build-up of Jesus’ foreboding as Judas walks out of that upper room?
Can you feel the upsurge of emotions that culminates in the Garden of Gethsemane? “His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.”
Imagine the rising conflict between his human feelings and his eternal mission to save sinners. Very shortly, he would tell his remaining disciples, “The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.”
In that precious upper room, the gentle warmth of the day has
evaporated. The companionship of his disciples has become of little comfort. Right now, his betrayer is fulfilling his plot. Apprehension fills the air.
Can you feel the ominous chill of those four simple words?
“And it was night.”
