“How about us whipping up a real breakfast instead of cereal?” I suggest. “Do we have any bacon?”
“Sure do. Somehow I thought this might happen,” she smiles. I grab a fry pan while she rummages through the refrigerator.
“Grab the eggs while you’re in there; we can scrambled a few of those. Maybe a batch of pancakes would go well with that combo too,” I venture.
The smell of frying bacon brings the twelve year old twins, Jill and Justin, hurrying down the stairs. Jimmy John is close behind, his three year old hands clutching his truck.
We’re soon seated around the table, and thanking God for our food.
“So what’s on the agenda for today, Dad?” queries Justin.
“No agenda, son. Isn’t that what we agreed on for this week? Does anyone have any suggestions?”
Justin votes for SciWorks. He plans to be a scientist, or an astronaut, or a weatherman. Just depends what day you ask him. Jill still has a wee smidgen of little girl left in her, and she wants to go to the Doll Museum. Jimmy John gives his choice - Donno (that’s MacDonald’s to the rest of us). After some discussion, we decide that since we’re running in low gear today, the Doll Museum would be a good choice. SciWorks will be more time consuming, so it will be better left for another day. My wife reminds us that everyone will get to do at least one thing they choose this week, and the others will go along cheerfully, without groaning and complaining. So it is that Justin, Jimmy John and I endure the dolls. There are actually some pretty cool specimens. Don’t tell anyone I said so. We follow that up with MacDonald’s, so the whole crew is happy.
“Let’s sleep in the backyard tonight,” someone suggests.
I’m sure we won’t get much sleep, but it will be fun to point out what little we know about the sky and, of course, Justin will be happy to display his superior knowledge. We can bring our heavenly Father into the conversation also as we try to count the stars and think about who made them all. Doesn’t the Bible say something about teaching our children as we walk along the way?
Wednesday night, after the children are asleep in their beds, Melody and I pack swim suits, towels and assorted must haves at the beach. We plan to surprise the kids with a day at the ocean. Due to the four hour drive, we would never think of going down and back all in the same day, so they will never guess. We can hardly wait to see their faces when they finally realize where we’re headed. The older kids can read the road signs. It will be late when we get home, sunburned and exhausted, but man what a fun day we’re anticipating!
The rest of the week will include a day at the water park, a picnic at Daniel Boone Park, and side trips to Sweet Frog. SciWorks will get fitted in as well. There’ll be time for table games in the evening. The kids are always begging us to do that, and we rarely seem to be able to fit it into our busy schedules. Junk food will be the norm. Domino’s is happy to bring it right to our door. I don’t want my wife stuck in the kitchen. One night we may even go out to a nice restaurant, and let the kids practice manners.

Over the weekend, we shared how we felt about our experiment. Everyone agreed this was a great week. We might try it again sometime.
