Hello to my 16 year old self from my almost 50 year old self. Yes, that’s right, 50. I didn’t stutter. Listen, I want you to know that you are beautiful and loved by so many people. I know you look at yourself in the mirror and call yourself ugly and fat and sneer at your reflection. Don’t do that. God made you in his perfect image.
Don’t hate that mean girl. That hate will only take root and cause you to grow bitter and angry. I know she laughs at you and makes fun of you in public but in the future, God does some really cool things in her life and she lives for him every day. She goes on mission trips and has adopted beautiful children from Africa. She is an amazing woman of God.
Stay away from those bad boys that just want to use you and throw you away. I know you’re lonely and you need to feel pretty but trust me, those fleeting private moments are a temporary fix. You’ll wake up and go to school the next morning to find out those boys have loose lips. This will make you very angry and you will harbor that anger for many years. It will wrap around you like a black cloak and smother you. Respect yourself and say no. There are a few boys that really like you but are too shy to let you know.
Go back to church and say yes to that youth group teacher that wants your help with Vacation Bible School. I know you want to go down another path, but that path is very crooked and it will throw you off balance. It tempts you with a fun life of adventure but it turns into a dirt road leading you to a desert. It will take most of your young adult life to right yourself again.
You started high school with a clear plan for college. Stick with that plan, study hard and don’t listen to that little voice in your head telling you that you’re stupid. You are not stupid! You are very smart and creative. That negative voice in your head will only grow and morph into a giant lie. You will become bitter, jealous and envious of people with college degrees. That voice will destroy your self esteem and that angry bitter root will only dig deeper into your soul.
Remember that night long ago when you were feeling so lost and lonely? You said a prayer to God that night and asked him to send you someone that would love you and cherish you and make you feel safe. You asked him to send you a Mr. Rogers, complete with a sweater and sneakers. Well girl, let me tell you that God listened and he has a sense of humor. He sent you someone just as you asked but Mr. Rogers? No, honey, he sent you a red neck cowboy! A handsome rugged one too, complete with cowboy boots and guitar.
You have trying years ahead. The bitterness from your past has been growing deep roots and it springs up from the dark earth into full bloom rage at times. The man God sent to you helps you through those dark times. Your man will build you up, not tear you down. He puts out the raging fire of anger with love and compassion.
So, I leave you with one more word of advice. Have hope, stay in God’s word, stay in church and prayer. Jesus calms the raging storm.
Yours truly,
Future Me
