“No!” Lupita screamed.
She wasn’t hurt physically, but her emotions were beyond repair. She jumped to her feet, tears crashing down her face, and raced up the stairs. She reached the top, veered to her right toward the upstairs bathroom, went inside, locked the door, and crumpled to the floor. She had failed in the worst way possible. She had one chore and she had been unable to complete it. She was a failure.
“Lupita,” A voice called with a soft knock on the bathroom door.
“I ruined everything,” Lupita responded with deep anguish in her voice.
“Please unlock the door, Lupita,” The voice had a sing-song quality.
“Why?”
“We love you, Lupita.”
“I’m a failure.”
“You are our dear Lupita. You will never be a failure.”
“I ruined everything.”
“Please unlock the door.”
Lupita slowly rose to her feet. She looked at herself in the mirror and all she could see was a failure. She wiped her face before walking over to the door, unlocking it, and opening it carefully.
“Grandmother?”
“Yes, Lupita.”
“You never come up here.”
“I was so worried for you. I wanted to see how you were.”
“I messed up everything.”
“You had an accident dear. Please come downstairs.”
Lupita held out her hand and she and her grandmother slowly descended the stairs. Lupita understood what a sacrifice it had been for her grandmother to walk up the stairs. She could hear the deep breaths her grandmother had to take at each step. Eventually they were downstairs. Tea had been set out for three. Lupita’s mother stood smiling and waving them over. Lupita, head down, slowly approached as her grandmother released her hand and found her favorite chair.
“I’m so sorry, mother,” Lupita said not looking up.
Lupita’s mother knelt down next to her, touched her face lovingly, and said, “I love you, Lupita. You did very well.”
“But I messed up everything.”
“Please come here.”
Lupita’s mother led her to a chair and they all sat down with three cups and three saucers. Lupita looked at her cup and saucer and noticed the damage that she had done.
“I’m so sorry, mother.”
“You didn’t do that, I did.”
“But I dropped them.”
“You have the ones that I dropped when I was a girl.”
“Grandmother?”
“Yes, dear. Your mother has mine and I have yours."
“I don’t understand.”
“These are reminders that we all make mistakes and we all forgive each other for being less than perfect. And we still love each other even more.”
Lupita drank her tea from the slightly scarred cup and looked at the slightly scarred saucer that held it. She had dreamed of perfection, but today she had received a gift so much better.
