Topic: Foreign Language (12/09/10)
Text messaging is the new language of the younger generation but can seem like a foreign language to those more used to the almost lost art of letter writing. Here is some correspondence between an aunt and her teenage niece.


My dear Mary, I have not heard from you for a while and I do hope the wedding preparations are going smoothly.
Your uncle and I are not getting on to well at present, in fact he has been giving me the silent treatment for several months now, and I have no idea what I have done to upset him. I was wondering if you might be able to come and stay for a little while. I could really do with a bit of help. I am suffering all the usual symptoms for this stage of pregnancy and am feeling a bit low.
I don’t expect you to write a proper letter back in response I know that teenagers don’t do that nowadays but please text me and let me know your plans, your loving aunt Elizabeth

My dearest Mary, I am writing straight away to tell you I the good news of the safe delivery of my baby boy. My husband has decided he should be called John. I know it is not a family name but he is quite insistent and once he gets an idea in his head there is no stopping him. So John the little chap is and that is that.
So, my dear, I am so pleased that things are going better for you now. I know that it has been a shock for your parents but you know that I am fully behind you and I believe every word you say. I have written to your mother and tried to smooth things along for you. Don’t take any notice of those gossips in the village. The main thing is that Joseph is standing by you and supporting you.
I know that angels are not common but if someone as matter of fact and sceptical as my husband can see angels…… well anything is possible. He claims that he met an angel at the temple and that the reason he did not talk to me all that time was because the angel took away his power of speech. Sometimes I wish that angel would come back he is certainly making up for those months of silence now!

Hey thx!!! So glad to hear about my lttle nephew!!!!! John is a cool name. I hpe 2 c him soon but will need to wait awhile as we hve gt 2 go to register soon 4 the census. Typical!! They cld hve waited a few mnths till rfter my bb born. I just hp he don’t cme 2 soon. I want 2b tucked up at home 4 my 1st bb!!! I hve got a nme 4 my bb but it is a surprise so u wll have 2 w8 2 c that xxxxx Mary xxxxxx

My dearest Mary, all is well with our family, John is a contented baby but a bit of a fussy eater. I love to dream about what he will be when he is older, a priest maybe like his dad or a doctor or teacher maybe. We are going to give him every opportunity in life and have put his name down for the best school in the area already.
I am sorry to hear that you have got to travel at this late stage of your pregnancy but that is just the way with these rules and regulations, no exceptions sadly. Still I am sure that you will be there and back in a few days and have your baby safely with your mum and helpers at your side. Don’t be anxious first babies are generally late.
Try and rest as much as you can. I am longing to know what you are calling your baby, hopefully not another john!! I can’t wait to introduce the babies I am sure they will become great friends. Be sure to text me as soon as there is any news!!

You have an unusual take on the topic. I love the story you wrote about and this certainly brings it into the 21st century. Try spacing between paragraphs. It helps the readers and the overall look of your piece. Thanks for writing.

What an interesting story about foreign languages. Testing to my generation is truly foreign. I enjoyed this very much. Good job on writing this story, because it does show the diverse aspect of generational gaps.

How clever you are to bring the Christmas story into the twentyfirst century. You made it so convincing and yet you allowed the past to catch up with the present and keep to the subject. Great job.
