Jeffery slowly lifted his eyes from the computer screen and it looked as if he was about to cry. “Tommy, this story has me so wound up with all the raw emotions running wild that I can hardly write. My mind is going 120 MPH and I can’t type as fast as my mind is running. This story is aching to be birthed, but trying to calm my mind is almost impossible.”
Tommy could sympathize with Jeffery, because he had gone through those same emotions two days prior. “Jeffery I think you need a break, but knowing how you write that is going to be very difficult. What is the one thing that takes your mind away from the challenge of writing a story especially one that is aching to be told?”
Jeffery’s eyes started to sparkle as a smile played across his face. “Tommy you are a genius. The one thing that calms my mind is sitting on the beach staring out as far as my eyes can see where ocean and horizon meet and become one. That view reminds me of how wonderful my God is. My juices start flowing and so do the words.
Tommy stared at Jeffery for several seconds unable to speak. “Jeffery I never thought about going to the beach with all those people. The noise distracts me; I need peace and quiet to write. I just start praying at my desk and get my mind back on Him, because if I lose focus or take my eyes off Him for a split second this old world grabs me and what comes out of my brain to my computer is absolute and total nonsense.”
Jeffery bounded out of his chair grabbed his laptop, his back pack and caught Tommy’s arm as he headed for the door. “Tommy, my boy I’m going to take you to my most favorite spot on the beach and let you find out for yourself why I go there when my mind is in turmoil like it is right now. I think you will be surprised and awed at my secret place where I love meeting God for inspiration.”
Jeffery ran out the door with Tommy in tow as they made their way down to the beach. Jeffery ran down the pier and jumped into his little dinghy as he excitedly motioned for Tommy to get on board. Jeffery rowed out from the beach to a big rock jutting out of the ocean. He carefully tied the dinghy to an anchor bolt in the rock. “Come on Tommy get the lead out and move. You are in for a treat.”
I slowly made his way up to the summit where Jeffery stood. A blanket lay with snacks, water and Jeffery’s laptop. “Oh, Jeffery this is heavenly and the rock is flat where you can sit and survey God’s magnificence in complete and total peace and quiet.”
Jeffery grinned from ear to ear and sat down with his laptop and started typing frantically all the while praying for guidance and direction aloud. About 2 hour passed when Jeffery finished his article and gave it to me to proof. As I slowly read each line tears ran down my cheeks as I was humbled by this young man who had a love for God so deep that it showed in his writing. He had overcome the writers challenge for this weeks article and in my opinion it would pass the editors critique with flying colors. The first and last verse from his poem will stay with me the rest of my life. I jotted them down and will have a plaque made. I will place it next to my desk to forever remind me that we are here not to bring glory to ourselves, but glory to God the Father creator of the known universe.
Lord it’s not about me, but You Father.
You are Creator of this vast universe.
Your strength, grace, mercy and love
Is what holds everything in place.
You are my life, my heart,
and my very soul.
You shed Your innocent blood
to make me whole.
