As any farmer or gardener could tell you, summer is the growing season. Spring sowing is complete. There is much work to do before it is time for the harvest.
Young plants must be carefully tended. Dry, parched roots must be watered on a regular basis. The proper mix of fertilizer must be supplied so that each individual plant gets the nutrients it needs to flourish and grow to fruition. Weeds must be meticulously removed so the crop does not get choked out and die before it bears fruit. Much diligence is required during this summer growing season for the promise of a good harvest to be fulfilled.
But, sometimes the locusts come. A farmer can lose his entire season’s work in less than a day. Devastated and discouraged, it can be very hard to start again with most of the summer gone. Time and time again, that is exactly what happens. A leap of faith is taken, and though the summer growing season is cut short, the time is taken to replant and hope for the harvest.
Spiritually speaking, I believe we, as believers, experience a summer growing season. Seeds of the gospel have been sown. Churches have been planted. There’s much work to be done before it’s time for the Harvest.
Young Christians must be discipled. They must be immersed in the Living Water. More mature believers must make sure they are provided with the “meat” of the Scripture, so they can grow in their faith. They must hear “the truth spoken in love”, and be encouraged to remove any “weeds” they find in their lives. Much commitment and diligence is required during this summer growing season to allow the Fruits of the Spirit to grow.
But, sometimes the locusts come. A painful divorce. The death of a child. Joblessness. Financial ruin. The loss of one’s faith. Devastated and discouraged, it can be very hard to start again as the summer growing season draws to a close, but GOD has given His children a promise: “And I will restore to you the years the locusts have eaten.”- Joel 2:25a (KJV). Though the summer growing season may be cut short, there is still time to take a leap of faith, and believe in GOD’s promise for the Harvest.
