“Look all you need to do is have one drink, or a shot, as an initiation.” Kim added.
Sandy was torn. She had so longed to be apart of “the in crowd,” yet she was not prepared to get involved with drugs or alcohol.
“Sorry, even one small drink would go against what I believe in, and there is no way I would touch drugs. One drink leads to another and so it goes.”
“Oh my word, how childish can you get?” Glen fumed. “In case you haven’t noticed this is the 21st century and we are all young adults.”
Young adults they certainly were. They were all in their final year of school. Sandy had come to the school at the start of the final year, as her parents had moved to Cape Town from their farm in the Western Cape. They had to sell their farm as the drought had almost crippled them. Sandy’s grandparents had offered them a home in Cape Town with them. The move had devastated them, yet it was a choice they had to make.
Sandy sighed with resignation, as much as she wanted to be friends with them she knew it would lead to trouble.
“If I need to drink to be part of your group, count me out.” She said and turned to walk away.
“You’ll regret it.” Kim shouted after her. “What makes you so perfect?”
“I am far from perfect” Sandy began,
“Whatever!” Glen rudely interrupted. “Come guys we’re wasting time here” he said as she stormed off.
Glen was fuming. From the moment he set eyes on Sandy he wanted her. His whole life he was spoilt. Whatever he had wanted he had got. Both his parents thought he was marvelous. Little did they realize though what their indulgence had done to him? Girls adored him, as he was good looking. He was tall, with a good body and he had the most beautiful eyes. From an early age, he had always been the leader of the pack. If crossed he was not a pleasant person. Kim had been “his adoring slave” from the time she had met him at school. Together they were trouble.
Over the next few months, Sandy’s life changed dramatically.
Rumours spread about her. One in particular, hurt badly. She was supposed to have had a child the previous year, hence the reason for her starting a new school in her final year. Most of her fellow pupils chose to believe the lies and ignored her, only one or two stuck with her. Her beloved puppy, Gemma, was poisoned and their cat, Sammy had disappeared mysteriously. Later he was found dead.
Sandy stayed focused. She was hurting badly, but she had a vision for her life, which she intended fulfilling.

The courtroom was packed. The court orderlies had to close the doors early, as there was no more room inside. The press was there in full force. None of the local or national editors wanted to miss this judgement.
“Will the court please rise for the Honourable Judge Sandy Phelps?” The court orderly announced.
Sandy walked in with her head held high. She took her seat and looked at the accused, Glen Walker.
How the years had changed him. His alcohol and drug abuse had taken their toll. His once handsome face was red and bloated. His eyes were dull and lifeless. He looked at Sandy; in fact, he had not been able to believe what he had seen throughout his trial.
“Will the accused please stand?”
“You stand charged with the murder and rape of six women; the crimes were committed over a period of ten years. The women of this city have lived in fear for the past ten years. Many other women are still missing and unaccounted for. The crimes you committed were against helpless women and were heinous. I have listened to all the arguments for and against you. If the law permitted, I would have no hesitation in passing the death sentence. I hereby sentence you to six terms of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.”
“For those who will fight bravely and not yield, there is triumphant victory over all the dark things of life.” J. Allen
