Detective Marjorie Maloy was a Christian and the leader of a weekly women’s bible study. The only thing Marjorie loved more than her job was God. Her husband had been killed in an automobile accident 8 years ago and she had never remarried and she had never had children. The only family she had was her church family and her co-workers.
Marjorie attended the weekly Bible study and afterwards she tried to spend a few minutes with everyone that attended. The previous week, there had been a new face in the crowd, and Marjorie wanted to get to know her. She spotted her in the crowd and rushed to talk with her.
Almost out of breath, Marjorie began to speak, “So glad you could back tonight, Annette. I hope we can get together soon and you can tell me about yourself and your family.”
“That would be great. We’re new in town and it’s just me and my younger sister.
Marjorie began to sense a familiarity about Annette. She knew she was staring, but she couldn’t stop.
“Is everything ok, Marjorie? You look like something is wrong.”
“I’m not sure, you remind of someone. What did you say your sister’s name was?”
“Her name is Cassandra. Why?”
“Is her last name, Reynolds?”
Annette replied, “Yes, how did you know? Do you know my sister? She is the coordinator for the new homeless shelter they recently opened here.”
Marjorie could feel the panic rise inside of her. Was the woman that had been brutally murdered Annette’s sister? The passport found with the woman had her name on it. Marjorie was looking to her heavenly Father for wisdom so she would know how to handle this situation. These were the kind of things that no training could prepare you for.
“Where is your sister now?” Is she coming to the Bible study tonight?’ Marjorie asked.
“She’s working late at the shelter, but she’s picking me up. Maybe you can meet her then. Oh, there she is now.”
Marjorie turned and saw the same girl’s face that was on the passport photo. She breathed a sigh of relief. Annette made the introductions and Marjorie knew she had to ask Cassandra some questions. She told her about the woman’s body, the passport and New Testament Bible they had found near the woman.
Tears began to fall from Cassandra’s eyes as she said, “I may be able to help you. We had a woman come to the shelter a week ago. Her name was Annie Walker. She was homeless and asked to stay in the shelter for a few days. She kept to herself, but we had saw her reading the New Testament Bible we had given her. Then one day, she was gone. Later, I noticed my passport was gone, along with some cash I had. I never carry any credit cards to the shelter or very much cash. I feel like Annie may have taken it. We haven’t heard from her since, but I was able to contact her family with the information she gave us when she entered the shelter. They have been looking for her for two years. They are on their way from another state and should be here tomorrow. They were so excited to know she was alive. I know Annie had a birthmark on her right upper arm."
Marjorie knew the victim was Annie Walker; she remembered seeing a birthmark on the body. Marjorie was relieved to know they could now identify the body, but sad that a family that was so excited about seeing a loved one after two years was going to be devastated at the terrible news of her death. Marjorie began to pray for the family of Annie Walker.
