“Why is it so dark, she ponders, in her sleepy state? I should be able to see the glow of the night light, at least.”
Slowly the outlines in the room become visible as she stretches her arms and back to make her aching body start coming to life. There is the door to the bathroom, the little night stand beside her bed.—no antique dresser anymore-gone- like so many things she held dear. Gone to the highest bidder like so many things since she lost her job. Gone, like the weekly paycheck she used to be able to depend on to buy all the things necessary to raise two children. Never enough food in the cupboard these days and certainly not enough money to face the coming Christmas season.
Then, with sudden clarity, she realized why it was so dark. The electricity had been turned off because she couldn’t pay the bill.
“How much worse will life become before I can see daylight again, Lord,”, , she whispered into the dark room. “How can I face the children and tell them there will be no Christmas in our house this year?”
“My child, Christmas is not about gifts under the tree and worrying about how to cope. Christmas is the time to show love to all and the greatest love is my love for you. I have promised I will always be here for you?”
“What, who said that?”, Jenny asked, a little frightened that someone was in her room.
Complete Silence.
“Lord, is that really you?” she whispered into the darkness. “Are you really talking to me? Oh my gosh, this can’t be happening.”
“My child, I have promised to never leave you nor forsake you. Now, wake up and get ready for the day ahead.”
“Mama, Mama, wake up right quick. You’ll never believe what we found on the front porch—hurry, hurry!” six-year old Jason yelled, as he jumped up onto Jenny’s bed and started shaking her.
“Okay, okay Jason, I’m awake and what in the world are you so excited about?” Jenny said, as she slid her feet into worn-out, blue, fleece slippers.
She had no idea what her little boy was so excited about, but, she was so happy to see him laughing and running like he used to before everything became so terrible that she just grabbed his hand and ran along with him to the front door. Turning the knob and opening the front door, the first thing she saw was a big Christmas tree, totally decorated and ready to drag into the living room. And then her eyes settled on gifts, all wrapped in pretty papers and ribbons and then she realized there were bags and bags with the name of the local grocery store written on the side. As tears began to slip down her cheeks her daughter handed her a postcard she had found on the front door. A note that the electricity would be turned back on before noon.
“Mama, where did all this come from?” questioned Jessica , her twelve-year-old daughter.
“ I’m not sure who did all this Jessica, but I know we need to bow our heads and thank God for sending us His angels to help us on this beautiful Christmas day! Merry Christmas my precious children!! We must never again forget that when God promises to care for us, He will find the way!
