Topic: Christmas Carols/Carolling (10/02/08)
Cocking his head to listen better, Micah enjoyed the Christmas music floating up towards heaven. Closing his eyes and swishing his angel wings to the beat, he softly sang along with the human refrain, "Silent Night, Holy Night, all is come, all is bright…"

"That's my favorite Christmas carol which the humans sing. Don't you agree, Gabriel?" Micah asked his friend.

Rustling his feathers, Gabriel replied, "Are you serious? That song doesn't come close to describing what happened the night Jesus was born! You were there, don't you remember what happened?"

Pacing back and forth in the depth of the darkness, Satan clinched his fists. Shaking them toward heaven he declared, "I will not allow this to happen. Do you hear me, God? I will do everything within my power to stop your Son from being born."

Pacing throughout the corridors of hell, he began yelling orders to the demons. "Shame, make sure there are self-righteous people to shun Mary and Joseph when they arrive in Bethlehem. That should guarantee no one will want to open their homes to a harlot. Jezebel, do everything you can do to stop this birth from happening. Take control of the situation. Delay the family to ensure when they get to Bethlehem all the rooms will be full. Force Mary to give birth out in the open where it will be unsafe. Death, be ready to steal the life of the baby once he is born. Quickly, be on your way."

Gabriel, Micah and a host of angels, aware of Satan's evil plans, were waiting in the dark corridors of Bethlehem. The universe was aquiver with the spiritual battle raging for the life of mother and Son. The forces of good and evil dueled far into the night.

"No! It can't be possible," Satan shrieked. Clutching his chest, he fell to his knees staring in horror at the star born in the heavens. He understood all too well its significance.

Jafar scratched his head while looking into the well of his sextant for the umpteenth time. The star was still there. "Darius, you're going to want to see this!" he yelled to his friend. "I do believe I just witnessed a miracle in the universe."

Darius, quickly snatching the sextant, scanned the skies. "There it is! I see it too. Jafar, what a momentous occasion this is." They both knew witnessing the birth of a star was an once-in-a-lifetime happening.

"How many star gazers do you suppose are aware of this wonderful miracle?" Jafar asked. Unless a person was familiar with the night sky, such an event would go unnoticed by the majority of the masses.

"There has to be a reason for this star to suddenly appear," Jafar reasoned. He was already searching through his pile of manuscripts to see if something had been written concerning the star.

Shaking his head, Jafar fought to stay awake. Stretching and yawning, he spoke his first words after hours of reading, "My friend, we are down to our last manuscripts. If we don't find the answer here, we may never know the reason for this glorious star."

Darius jumped to his feet, "I think we have our answer! Right here in these Hebrew writings. Several books predict the birth of a Messiah who is to be the King of Israel. In a book called Numbers it even talks about a star which will come out of Jacob."

"This is a king to be honored," declared Jafar. "If even the heavens respond to his birth, how majestic must he be?"

The shepherds tried to calm the sheep which refused to be comforted. "What do you suppose is spooking them?" asked Joseph.

"Beats me," answered Seth. "Sheep are a nervous bunch but I've never seen them this antsy before."

Joseph shivered in the warm night air. "I feel it too. It's like something big is about to happen but I can't put my finger on it. Do you know what I mean? Seth? Didn't you hear me? Seth? Why aren't you answering…?"

At that moment, Joseph looked up into the face of a majestic angel and fainted.

Micah chuckled, "That was pretty funny. Joseph's friends carried him all the way to Bethlehem. Later they told him about the 'Do not fear' part and about me and the other angels praising God."

Gabriel smiled, "It was quite a night! Albeit, it was a holy night; but by far, it wasn't a silent night."

I love this! I love your take on the title Silent Night, but I agree with you...there was a lot of "hoopdela" going on! Great story.

I like the pacing of this.

I'd also really enjoy a story just about the terrified shepherd.

Great take on the topic - and the carol. I never considered how wrong the description "silent night" was. I like the short scenes. Each one is well written, and together they make a great "flash-back episode" for your angel MC's.

I enjoyed the different scenes.I agree it would make for a wonderful story for children with all the different scenes and drama. Must have been quite a night.

This is beyond creative! Wow! I love how you've written this from a "counter-carol" perspective. :) Your descriptions of the spiritual battle are so graphically real. Very good work on this.

I can testify myself that birth is NOT silent! LOL Nor are animals, for that matter. Nice job - it flowed very well despite the many scenes. Excellent work!
