Wanted: Fit Players
The question I have to ask is “Fitness for what?
When is a person fit for life?
When is a person mature enough to deal wisely with life’s intrigues?
You could say that life is a game, like polo, or football, or tennis, that we all play. There is an opponent and an opportunity. Games take training, and coaches, managers, teams, programs and plans, rules, spectators, even umpires and definitely players. WOW! They are complicated things. So, what of the most complicated game of all, the game of life, which we must play, whether or not we are fit, have a coach, manager, team, program, plan, a set of rules etc.
Wanted:
Players for the local team to play the game of life.
Introductory evening this Sunday at the oval. All welcome.
Free Barbecue following the speeches.
Players will be able to enroll for training and selection. We are also looking for managers for each team, people to be trained as umpires, groundsmen. ……
“Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for coming out this evening to inquire about The Great Game. How many have played a game before today? Quite a few I see.
This Game of Life is different in that the ball is designed to change weight periodically. This means that players have to be very adaptable and sensitive to the changes. Sometimes it is like a balloon and floats slowly and steadily. At other times it is like an Aussie rules football which doesn’t bounce straight, so there’s an art in bouncing it at these times. At other times you’ll find it’s hard and fast like a cricket ball, and it hurts a bit to catch it. This makes training quite difficult as you cannot anticipate how the ball will behave, but if you know all the rules, it helps incredibly with plays.
This is the rule book. There is a lot to learn in here. You can’t read it all in one night, so you learn as you go, by constant playing and constant reading. The book tells you all about the coach who is the greatest player of all. He is always available on the telephone so there is no excuse for not calling Him up and developing your game. Once you know Him you’ll get to think like Him and that’s when you start playing well and can get selected for the team. Keeping in touch with the coach will develop your plays to amazing levels – you’ll be stunned by how you can manage those balls. You can even have Him on line during the game to call the plays!
The trouble is that the line sometimes gets crossed, so you need to know the coach very well, otherwise you may be listening to the wrong voice. This is where you can check by knowing the rule book well, because the usurper can sound very reasonable, but he somehow gets the rules all twisted and you have to know when this is happening. The coach always goes by the book! He actually wrote it, so He can’t get it wrong!
He’ll be looking for captains, wingmen, forwards, backs, goalies and goal shooters. The goal is to get new players for our team
The opposition is very cunning. They have a different rule book and you never can guess what they’ll come up with. They just make up the rules as they go – whatever suits them. That’s why we need strong unity. When we stand together in solidarity they can’t get away with much, but if we weaken in this respect they’ll set up some devious schemes, and it’s very difficult to get things back on track.
If you keep studying the book and talking to the coach, and studying plays with the others on the team, you’ll win a huge prize at the end of the season, and we’ll all get to meet the coach in person at The Grand Banquet!. Regular training nights are essential.
Now, if those of you who want to play in the home team, will sign on here and give us your details, we’ll be in touch in the next day or two, to let you know about the first team practice.”

It really starts to roll about a thrid of the way down, with the "good evening" bit. You might consider starting it there.
This is a painless, non-preachifying way to get across some important points. Well done.
