Lately, neither of us are prone to dart out of bed. It takes me a bit to wake up. But there was a lot to do this morning. There were kittens to feed, a dog to let out, cats to medicate and a morning run to take.
My feet didn’t feel like running. Not today. I have never been a runner. However, desperately out of shape, I knew that I needed to do something. The alarm would be going off again soon. I raised up and before letting my feet hit the carpet, I paused and said a quick prayer.
Lord, let me please you today. Keep me safe and away from evil. Do the same for Terri. Watch over us and our loved ones. Let us honor and glorify you today. Let us bring you praise. Help me be gentle and kind.
Since Terri was still snoozing, I attempted to get up quietly and complete my morning chores. “Meows” greeted me from our three indoor cats, one of whom we had recently adopted after she had a litter of kittens on our porch. The kittens outside scurried to the patio door as they spotted me moving around. Our big blue healer panted as he trounced down the hallway ready to be let out.
The alarm went off, and I heard Terri make her way to the shower. She was going to work early this morning to get a head start on the week.
“Good morning,” I muttered as Terri walked into the laundry room to get a freshly cleaned towel.
“Good morning, sweetie,” she responded. As she got ready for work, I went about finishing my tasks so that I could attempt my run.
At this point in my fitness journey, my run was measured in time rather than distance. My padded soles pounded the concrete sidewalk as I trudged through the neighborhood. The computer-generated voice on my smartphone told me the time and distance it expected me to travel this morning--1.54 miles in 27 minutes and 22 seconds. It didn’t sound fast, but as I tried to keep pace between walking sixteen minutes and running at twelve minutes a mile, my body quickly told me it was faster than I thought. My only relief from the struggle came in knowing the longer I ran, the longer I could delay taking my first mid-term of the semester. Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow? I smiled, suffering in my temporary athletic solace as my feet continued moving around the paved circuit, my reluctant body following along with them.
