Across town in her little cottage, Jeanie sat with her nine month old daughter and prayed her little girl’s fever would soon break. The little girl’s eyes were usually a beautiful shade of hazel that caught the light with hints of amber and gold. Today, they were sullen and an ugly shade of gray-green. Her angelic daughter was listless and cranky.
As the time passed and the day grew more ominous Jeanie’s angel became more ill. She could now not keep anything on her stomach and kept pulling at her ears. The crying turned to wails and sobs and tears fell in a steady stream down her plump rosy little cheeks. Jeanie had to do something and do it now!
The snow was piling up fast, but Jeanie had no choice…her baby was sick and she was responsible for her. As she sat in the driveway her mother’s voice rang loud and clear in her head. Her mother had always told her to put everything in the Lord’s hands and not to worry about anything. Her mother had inspired her to trust in Jesus as her Savior and led her to salvation. Geneva let out a cry and Jeanie put the car into gear. She slowly backed out into the street and found a path in the snow as she headed to the emergency room.
She was taking her time and as she proceeded she offered up a prayer to Jesus. “Please help me dear Lord! I have no one else to turn to and my mother seems to think you are my answer at the moment. Are you? Will you keep us safe and in one piece until we get to the hospital?”
At that moment a Mercedes slammed into the rear of her Fiesta and sent her into a three hundred and sixty degree spin not just once but twice. Jeanie’s car ended up at the end of the next block with the front end rammed into a traffic light pole. Geneva was screaming and Jeanie had been knocked out from the impact.
When Jeanie woke up she was hooked to an IV drip and in a hospital bed. Where was Geneva? What happened? How did she get to the hospital? And, who was that extremely handsome man standing just outside her door talking to the nurses?
“Oh, hello,” he said once he realized her eyes were open. “Would you like to see your daughter now?”
“Of course I would! How is she? Do you know what is wrong with her?”
“Just a simple case of the chicken pox. We have been taking very good care of Geneva, she’s an angel! You mumbled her name as you were asking Jesus to care of her when the EMT’s were loading you into the ambulance.”
“My mother’s advice. Jesus DID get us here safely, but not how I had planned it. I guess that is what happens when we give Him control and let Him do it His way and according to His will.”
“So very right you are, Jeanie. He is our help every day if we let Him be. And I would like to be your help too. I have fallen in love with little Geneva and was wondering if I could be a part of your lives? What would you say to dinner and dancing once you are out of here and healed? I know my mother would gladly watch Geneva for you while we were getting to know one another.”
“Who are you? I don’t even know your name!”
“Sorry, I didn’t introduce myself. I am Dr. Everheart…your doctor while you are here. Now lie back and get some rest. Be assured that Geneva is in good hands.”
As Jeanie closed her eyes her thoughts went to her mother and to Jesus. She thanked them both profusely and realized her mother was right. Jesus handles everything if we let Him. Not only did He get us here safe, He put Geneva and herself in the hands of a loving caring Godly man who just might become Geneva’s new father. Jesus had sent her earthly help…complete with a new family!
