“Why couldn’t Bob do something really romantic like Tom did for Heather?” she fumed. “When Heather woke up on her wedding anniversary she found her bed covered with red roses. Imagine the scent! They certainly wouldn’t have smelt anything like these stinky marigolds. And they’re half dead anyway. How could Bob think of insulting me like this? If he thinks a cup of tea and a bunch of half-dead marigolds are good enough for our anniversary, he has another think coming! He needn’t expect anything from me.”
As Sheree flung a dress onto the bed, the sleeve knocked the marigolds onto the floor. “Serves them right,” she muttered.
Just then Bob walked into the bedroom and seeing the flowers scattered over the floor, scooped them up and placed them back on the tray.
“Janie specially picked those for our anniversary. She was upset because she could only find half-dead flowers, so I said I would give them to you, and she could share my gift to you. It’s a bit heavy to carry up the stairs though, so you’ll have to come down.”
Sheree guiltily picked up the marigolds, picturing her three year old lovingly searching out flowers for her, and followed Bob down the stairs.
Janie came running towards her, eyes alight with excitement. “We’ve got a big surprise for you Mummy. Daddy got the surprise first though, but he said I could share it. Come on quick!” She pulled Sheree into the lounge.
There, beside the window, stood a piano, its dark polish gleaming in the filtered light of the curtains. Tears sprang to Sheree’s eyes as she read the words propped against the music stand.
‘To my darling Sheree.
I hear a song whenever you walk into the room.
This piano is just to accompany that song.
With all my love and gratitude for 5 wonderful years together.
Bob.
p.s. Janie wants to play it’s first tune as her special gift to you.
Almost beside herself with joy, Janie scrambled onto the piano stool and began plinketty plonketing her gift to her mother. Tears poured down Sheree’s cheeks as she buried her face in the marigolds.
“Oh Lord,” her heart cried, “forgive me for letting myself be offended so easily. Your word says that love is not easily offended, but all I did was insult Bob with my demeaning thoughts. I should have responded to what I thought was his gift, with love, instead of rejection, even though I didn’t understand the whole story. Thank you so much for the love of my husband and my little girl. Help me to let my song to them always be in harmony with Your love which is not easily offended.”
Throwing herself onto Bob’s chest, Sheree sobbed, “Have I ever told you that you are the most romantic man in the world?”
As Bob´s arms enfolded her, to Sheree it seemed that the wilted marigolds and the unmelodious tinkling of the piano were the perfect setting in which to celebrate an anniversary of love.
