Then when we moved to a “city” 50 miles away, I remember his impromptu visits. I can remember walking home from elementary school, seeing his car parked out in front of the house from a long way off. I would sprint the rest of the way home, knowing he would have treats for us kids, mostly in the form of a candy bar…except for me. I didn’t care for sugary treats in those days, so mine would be a bag of peanuts.
Memories of grandpa tend to be etched in my mind as a permanent place of quiet rest and reflection. I don’t remember a time when he raised his voice or frowned even though times were hard. There was a quiet confidence that emanated from him. Oh, to be more like him!
My mind shifts back to the present as Emily, my secretary, buzzes in to remind me of my next appointment. I think she had said my name several times before I responded. Then she walked on into my office, so I cleared my throat and said, “Sorry, Emily, I had just ‘gone fishin’’ for a moment there.” To which she gave me a puzzled expression. I just smiled and said, “It’s ok, it was only in my mind.” She walked out shaking her head and I smiled as I remembered more of “days gone by” with my simple-minded, yet highly respectable granddad.
