TITLE WHO AM I WORKING FOR?
The family awakens at the sound of the loud alarm. One hears the groaning and some moaning, “O, another busy day, I am still sleepy and tired.” Reluctantly father throws off the covers of the bed and goes downstairs to start the coffeepot. Mother rolls over and gets up to get the children ready before the school bus arrives. The boys are in the shower and all the movement upstairs indicates that they will soon come down for breakfast. The aroma of the fresh coffee fills the house. Mother is busy fixing healthy foods in lunch bags and on the table. The family prayer time is followed by a quick sit down breakfast altogether.
The hands of the clock seem to move faster today. Mother waves to her sons as they board the school bus with their backpacks, lunch bags, water bottles and jackets. Father picks up his laptop, briefcase and car keys and goes for his workplace. Mother cleans the kitchen and goes upstairs to make the beds, start the laundry and get herself ready for the jobs on hand
Grocery shopping, visiting a sick relative, errands to the post office and bookstore are on the agenda before lunch. The small kitchen garden needs some attention before dinner preparation begins. The boys will need help with school work. Mother wonders when all this hard work will end. She talks to herself and questions, ‘Lord, why am I expected to do so much each day?
Life was hectic enough when the children were small but even now why do I find no time for myself? Am I serving you, my family or myself? My art kit is collecting dust in the garage for months and my library book is long overdue.” Just then the phone rang and the hands of the clock reminded her that it is time to go to the hospital.
Many of us can relate to this situation and some others may have similar ones. The Bible admonishes us to work joyfully, to the best of our ability and to do whatsoever our hands find to do with all our might. A familiar hymn says, “There’s a work for Jesus ready at your hand----none but you can do-----it’s the task the Master just for you has planned,” As Christians we have a solemn responsibility to do our daily tasks honestly and well pleasing to our Heavenly Master. Shall we think and evaluate, who are we working for?
