TITLE: Dino,Molly,and Little Sister-Oh My! | Previous Challenge Entry

Eighteen year old Gertrude stood by the window fuming, the first customer of the day drove up to the intercom. She could see the front end of a new Thunderbird, similar to the one she was saving her hard earned money for. Pushing her glasses farther up her nose, she leaned out the window to get a closer look.
“How will I ever save up enough money working in this Grease Spoon,” she sighed.
Then her mind snapped back to reality. There was work to do. With a cheery note Gertrude yelled through the intercom.
“Welcome to Daphne’s how may I help ya?” The voice on the other end came in “I’d like Chi-buzz and buzz-pie with fries. Gertrude sighed in exasperation. “We really need to repair that intercom.”
“Need some help?” Molly inquired
“No” Gertrude whispered under her breath, “I am quiet capable of handling this.”
An impatient gruff voice screamed through the intercom “Where’s my buzz order?”
Molly turned her nose up in the air “Yes, it does appear that you have everything under control.”
Gertrude bit her lower lip to keep from giving back a sharp reply. Buzz the voice sounded again this time in short clipped words “Look…Lady…I…buzz…my …order…now!”
Gertrude’s temper reached the boiling point. “Hold your horses, your grub is comin.”
The car pulls up to the window. It was the big boss, Mr. Dino Daniels. Boy, was his face RED.
“Uh oh, I’ve done it now!”
“What was that young lady? I didn’t quiet catch that last remark, would you mind repeating it for me?”
Gertrude wished she could disappear before his piercing eyes.
“Mr..Mr… Dino, I… I didn’t know…I mean I honestly…would it help if I apologized?”
“I’ll talk to you later,” he snapped as he sped away, leaving Gertrude in a state of despair.
“That was a stupid mistake. He’ll fire me for sure.”
Gertrude blinked back unshed tears, it would be humiliating to have Molly see her cry.
“Hey Gert,” Molly called her by the hated nickname, “Here’s the coconut pie, chili burger, and fries you ordered.”
Seeing the window isolated she shrugged her shoulders.
“Oh, lost another customer I see, Gert, you know you really ought to control your temper.”
Before Gertrude could reply Molly half slipped on the recently mopped floor, and sent the tray of food she was carrying flying in the air. The order crashed with a splat on top of Gertrude’s bobbed brown curls, covering it with chili beans and coconut meringue pie.
“You did that on purpose!”
“You are mistaken my dear, I would never do a thing like that to you,” She said, trying to suppress giggles.
Angrily, Gertrude stormed out of the diner. While driving home, she sought consolation by thinking of how delicious a peanut butter and banana sandwich would taste.
Once inside, she found her little sister in the kitchen drinking out of the buttermilk carton and smacking on the last banana.
“I can’t believe this!”
The little sister hearing the remark, turned around and stared blankly at her.
“Huh? What can’t you believe, that I’m eating brain food?”
“Oh, never mind my life is over,” she shrieked dramatically.
Leaving the bewildered girl, she raced up to her room and flung herself across the bed.
Later after crying to sleep, Gertrude awoke to the unpleasant stench of dried chili mixed with meringue pie that was plastered all over her head.
She choked and gagged while hurrying to the shower. After scrubbing her hair, and donning on a flowered robe and fuzzy mules, she trudged to the bedroom.
Flipping on the radio, she mused, “Maybe some music will be spirit lifting.”
“Today’s daily devotion is: A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. Proverbs 17:22 KJV,” sparked out of the speakers.
“I don’t need this today,” she mumbled, flipping off the radio.
But, as the events of the day passed through her mind a little smile touched the corner of her mouth. The next second she was laughing too hard to stop.
“You know, GOD is right, there is humor in life. Even on a day like today.”
