“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Eccl 3:1 KJV
We look into the casket. The body is cold and lifeless. It has finished its season. In between the beginning and ending season was a life. A life that had a purpose or a life that just existed.
This life is over. Degrees, honors, positions and wealth mean very little. You look into a face that is still. These things can’t be enjoyed any longer. All the hard work, study and time spent mean little.
What were they like? What are the memories that cross through your thoughts? What are the things that force your attention? What was the purpose in this life? Was that purpose meaningful?
A purposeful life that was full of love, kindness, joy, giving and caring for others. These are a few of the things we think of as we look at the recently departed one. In their busyness they took time to show love and compassion. There was a joy in their heart that only God could give. They were giving and kind. Even in death this purpose in life shines through the memories that flood in one after another. The purpose of their living goes on.
A life without purpose just exists. It is selfish and unkind. Often heartache and trouble come because there is not a purpose in life. The flesh seeks to fulfill its worldly desires. It doesn’t care who is hurt. Death without purpose in a life that is neglected, ruined and sometimes evil is sad.
Death is one of the swiftest ways to remind us that we must have a purpose in life. After the seasons of our life, others will look into our face and remember. Our life is over and only the purpose will remain as a reminder of what we really stood for.

I so appreciate your potent last line: "only the purpose will remain as a reminder of what we really stood for."
