“Just like my life,” muttered Jonathan to himself, “constantly moving but never doing anything good for anyone. I am full of debris, and probably sand and old, smelly fish, too. Perhaps I’ll just walk into the waves and end it all.” As he continued to walk, Jonathan contemplated his seemingly useless existence.
“May I walk with you?” asked a voice. Jonathan was startled as he was sure he was alone on the beach. The stranger walked next to the water, forcing Jonathan to walk in the sand.
“Yeah, I guess so,” replied Jonathan, apathetically.
Jonathan didn’t want to talk. After a few minutes of silence, the stranger said, “When I see waves breaking, I think of God the Creator.”
“How so?” Jonathan was curious, even though he would not admit to it. “How can waves remind you of anything except relentless mundane boring sameness?”
The stranger replied: “Consider this – each wave can bring you debris from the ocean,” he paused, “including sand and smelly fish.”
Jonathan looked at the stranger, “How did you know ….”
The stranger continued, “Or each wave can bring you peace that comes only from your Savior. Waves break rocks and stones into sand grains. Likewise, if you let Him, God can break down those things than bind you and change them into sand grains that can be trampled upon and forgotten.”
Jonathan was intrigued now. “I’ve heard things like that, but I never understood them, until now. You make it seem so easy. Is that really all there is to it?”
The stranger smiled as he spoke: “You must accept Jesus into your heart, but you must be sincere and be sorry for your sins. God is greater than your heart, and He knows everything. This is why I say that there is a plan for your life, but you must choose the right path. With the right choice, you can be like the waves, trampling all those burdens into grains to be trod upon. You can carry Jesus within you and accept His grace, which is sufficient.”
Jonathan felt his heart pound within his chest and knew, without a doubt, that these words were true and meant for him. He turned to his left to speak to the stranger, but a voice calling from his right made him turn that way instead.
“Hey, Jonathan!” yelled Tiffani as she ran to meet him. “I’ve been looking all over for you. What are you doing out here? You hate the ocean.”
“I’ve been talking to a friend.” But as Jonathan looked around, he didn’t see anyone. “He was right here,” said Jonathan in a confused tone.
Tiffani laughed, “Yeah, right. I could see you from way over there and there wasn’t anyone here.” She touched his arm with concern. “Are you okay? You look odd.”
Jonathan immediately knew that Jesus was the stranger, although he was not sure how or why He came and went so quickly.
He spoke excitedly, yet was completely calm. “Tiffani, I’m more okay than I’ve ever been. The storms of my heart have been stilled to a whisper and the waves of my sea are hushed. I found Jesus while I was walking here – He offered me the love, peace, and joy that I never had. Listen – the waves roar with the sound of His name – and He is offering eternal life to anyone who will listen.”
Tiffani smiled, hugged Jonathan, and laughed joyously. “Oh, this is so incredible – I’ve been praying for you – I’ve been praying that Jesus would break through your chains and bring you to this knowledge. Praise God.”
As they began to leave the beach, Jonathan turned back to see a glorious sunset over the water. The formerly crashing waves were now rolling gently upon the sand. He said, “Jesus, thank you for showing me that You can trample all those burdens. I give myself to You and I pray that people will see the difference in me and their hearts will break open and allow you in. My Savior walked with me and I am in awe of You.”
Arm-in-arm, the two Christians left the beach, ready to break the news to everyone willing to listen.
